Greetings!
I am a sociologist at the University of Southern Mississippi, working with a colleague at the University of Florida on a project. We want to do a study that documents how mental disorders affect people's lives, and what health strategies people turn to. I want this study to get at what it means to really live with a mental disorder and day to day living....not turning people into statistics. You do not have to have received an official diagnosis as we would like to hear all the routes people take to wellness. Participants must be age 18+, and we will assign you a fake name so your real name would never be published. You can answer questions by e-mail, online chat, or over the phone.
Please contact me by e-mail for more information.
Thanks!

Dear Yellowbirdy,

Welcome to Healing Well and if you have made arrangements with Peter to do your study that is acceptable.

I am Kitt and would be interested in how the study works? Could you please explain in more detail?

Thank you so much. Again Welcome.

Thank you for your interest.
I am a sociologist so I am interested in the social aspects of mental disorders....I am especially interested in help-seeking pathways and how people deal with stigma. It is true that I could gather a lot of data just from reading posts. This is problematic for 2 reasons though....the first because I am interested in help-seeking pathways so I like to hear people's complete stories instead of excerpts. The other problem is that many Internet sites do not like researchers trolling for information through them, and ask that researchers respect the privacy (what there is on the Internet!) of the people who post and do not use this data for research. I take it the site does not have such a restriction? As for what I am asking people to do, I have a long list of questions asking people about their history of treatment/coping to how they define what they suffer from. I ask people to answer what they have time for and of course, ask people to skip any questions that they are uncomforable with. I ask people to answer these questions through e-mail or if they prefer, to chat online with me or over the phone. I have done work with people with OCD in the past, and I want to compare their experiences to those of people with different disorders.
Feel free to e-mail me for the questions if you are curious. You are under no obligation to participate.
If I can answer anything more specific, please let me know.
Thanks,
Dana

Kitt:
I just sent you an e-mail with the list of questions so you can get a better idea. Overall, the questions get at a full history of what a person has experienced. The questions cover whether the disorder has altered your life goals, how your symptoms have changed over time, whether you thought you had a mental disorder before being diagnosed and why, what prompted you to get diagnosed, your interaction with health care professionals, how you choose treatments and to what degree you have faith in the health care establishment or rely on social support or the Internet or alternative medicines, whether you have experienced stigma, and how you react to said stigma....
:)

Additionally, I will say that much research in the past on stigma in sociology relies on samples that have chronic problems or that have been hospitalized. I am recruiting off the Internet in order to reach people that may be avoiding diagnosis and treating themselves, or that are using the Internet in conjunction with professional health care....to try and reach a wider spectrum of people and gain a better understanding of stigma and other issues.
