I have been talking with a psychologist online about possibly going to him to talk and figure out my anxiety, and so forth.  He told me that he would like to meet with me, and then if we both decide it necessary, then I will meet with a psychiatrist once a month for 3 months in order to get put on meds.  Now, I understand that a psychologist cannot prescribe meds, that isn't my issue.  I am wondering, do psychiatrists perfrom physicals, or something?  The reason I ask is because I asked this guy if I would need to also go to a primary care doctor to get prescribed meds and he said no, he'd rather I meet with a psychiatrist, since they see more anxiety and panic and so forth.  So, my question is has anyone heard of a psychiatrist doing like a check up and if so, then what exactly do they do?

Thanks everyone.

I hope everyone is doing well!!!

to my knowledge no psychiatrists do not do physicals. they ask questions reaguarding your health. what meds your on, how your blood pressure is. that type thing. ( at least mine did) then they decide what meds are right for what they think is "wrong" with you. if it's been awhile since you've been to have a physical you might want to go have one done to get it out of the way and rule out any physical reasons. the shrink may require you too. i dont know. just a thought.
I am bipolar, have social anxiety, panic attacks w/agoraphobia , diabetes, asthma and high blood pressure. Life is short but i am not.

Yea, I definately want a pysical to rule out anything else being wrong too. That is why I was asking, because this psychologist is making it sound like I do not need to go to a regular doctor at all, and that didn't seem right to me. So, I was wondering if possibly the psychiatrist was going to try to do a pysical on me...which I wouldn't be O.K. with.

Thanks guys!

an ordinary doc will prescribe all the meds you need for anxiety and give you a physical

I dont think you need a psychiatrist, who will likely give you different and contradictory advice to that of the psychologist, I would see 1 or the other but not both

the psychiatrist usually needs a referral from an ordinary doc and is expensive, with a long wait for the first appointment

I have decided to meet with a regular doctor who is willing to see me and work with me without having insurance.  And, he knows I am almost ready to be insured, so he is going to be there to work with me.

That is what I have decided.  Although, I have heard from a number of people it isn't good to have a GP prescribe these kinds of meds.  I dunno. At any rate, I could use a physical anyway, so I am meeting with this guy!

Thanks for all the advice guys!

i'm glad that your goin to the any doc. and i think that a reg doc. is a better idea. he'll be able to make sure that nothing else is going on and all that jazz. your doing the right thing in my opinion. and you got to do what you can afford and whats right for you. so who cares if others say you should do it a different way. you do it your way and its gonna be ok.

Yep, at the moment I have to do what I can afford, and this is definately my best bet when it comes to money, PLUS, first and foremost, since I haven't had a physical in a while, that is a great idea to do!

Although I gotta admit, I am so totally nervous. (health anxiety, AND agoraphobia...though I have been slowly improving the agoraphobia!)

I will be fine though, I am sure.

Thanks for your input Cherries!

Hey Tammy,

Hi there, I think a medical screening exam by your physician for anxiety is a good place to start.  They can write RX for any meds.  If they feel their out of their realm prescribing meds they will refer you to a psychiatrist.

A psychiatrist does not do physicals but mine does check BP on each visit.

I am glad your taking a positive step.........kudos to you.

Gentle Hugs

Respectfully
Kitt
