Hey guys! I'm over here for the first time from the UC boards. I think this is the place for my question. I tend to have alot of anxiety & I am a worryer by nature. I saw a sleep specialist b/c I have a hard time sleeping. In passing he mentioned I could also go down the anti-anxiety med route as opposed to a sleeping pill. I mentioned this to my mom who insists I go on the meds. Yes I'm 30, married with a child and I still let my mom drive me batty. Anyway I guess my question is how do you know when it is the right time to go on meds for anxiety? My dad is diagnosed bipolar (going on 6 years now) so I worry about inheriting that as well. Okay thanks for letting me get all of that out!!!

I would try to see a Neurologist to see what is really going on with you.your Mom has no right to tell you what to do.What does your hubby say??He's what counts over your Mom.Sorry to be so blunt.

Hiya,

I would say that if you r a worrier and suffer from anxiety then absolutely look into the meds (just my opinion) but why suffer from something if you can improve and/or eliminate the problem.  There are other ways besides meds however, it depends on where you r with your journey.  You never know how things will go if you don't try.  Hope you find what your looking for.  Have a GREAT day!!

Hey,

I started taking anti-anxiety meds occasionally when I started getting physical symptoms resulting from my anxiety.  It really helps with sleeping also. You can try just a few times and see how it works out for you.  You can just take it as needed and not everyday if you're not comfortable with that.

GOOD LUCK!

antidepressant meds are most popular for anxiety and are a big help if you can find 1 that works for you, maybe start with generic prozac, its as good as the expensive new ones

valium as needed also helps, it can also help getting off to sleep but it has its limits

HI Tabitha,

I do not believe there is any right or wrong time to look at starting on meds.

If you have consulted with your physician I would lean toward picking the meds and giving them a fair trial.  Of course it sometimes takes more than one try to hit on the med that is right for you.

You come on back and join us, we will wait to hear how things go for you.

Gentle Hugs
