I was thinking, and wanted to see if oxygen tanks can be used to help with anxiety, hypertension, etc...  I know that they use oxygen in other scenarios to help calm people down, so why cant oxygen be used by everyone instead of all of these medications and such?  Has anyone ever heard of oxygen tanks being used in this way or has anyone ACTUALLY used it in the past to help with anxiety?

* personally I think it could work either way for ppl depending on the person but I have nothing to back this up only the thought of pure Oxygen going thru you versus the smog and air we breathe.......

I think this is a good question and I will be following this thread as I am intrigued myself

Take care and again
WELCOME......LYN

Dear Scott

Welcome to Healing Well and the A & P forum.

I will try to answer your question but remember I am a member like you and not a professional.

Hyperventilation is often due to anxiety or panic. When you hyperventilate you are breathing fast and blowing off your carbon dioxide. You need to slow your breathing down as your body is going into Respiratory alkalosis. Breathing into a paper bag you will prevent the lost of CO2. It is not the oxygen you need it is the carbon dioxide.

So to the best of my knowledge, no, using oxygen for the purpose of anxiety would not be the standard of care for simple hyperventilation.

Someone else may have information that is new.

Also oxygen is considered a medication and you need a RX for usage.

Again Welcome to our wonderful family. Please stay with us.

Hey Big sis

People that use Oxygen for a disease, respiratory or heart disease will definitely be more relaxed on the O2. They will feel short of breath off of the O2 and may feel like they are smothering, thus the panic and anxiety. For this person oxygen is the right choice.

They actually have Oxygen Bars in LasVegas where you can buy Oxygen treatment...............in flavors even. Of course there are lots of things you can do in Las Vegas.

Do you know what your oxygen blood level is......................have it checked in Drs. office with an oximeter.......if it is maintaining in low 90s, you may need some O2.

Our standard was 96-100% on room air. Unless you had a chronic lung disease and then you maybe did ok at 90%. Always individual.

Love ya,

Lil Sis
