hi,
i have been in therapy because i have a serious medical condition that is really hard to deal with. i am on zoloft and seeing a therapist. i keep finding out more things that are wrong with my body that freak me out. therapy helps but my parents are guilt tripping me about how much it costs. i already feel bad about the cost, especially on top of all my medical bills. i think therapy helps but i hate that i a making my parents spend money--i have already been such a burden. has anyone else felt this way? what do i do? i don't have the money to pay for this on my own...

Katie, your parents wouldn't keep paying for it if they couldn't afford it. Do you have community health centres? Sometimes you can see a counsellor for free through them.

Hi Katie

I'm sure if your parents do talk about costs that they don't mean to make you feel guilty, it sounds like you're probably feeling guilty all on your own :-)

Do they fully understand your condition?  Perhaps they could go with you to a therapy session to get an understanding of how much all this is upsetting you, or to a doctors visit with you to understand the severity of your condition.  Often knowledge creates tolerance and understanding.   Perhaps if they realised that their comments aggravated your anxiety or how the condition itself is quite scary and uncertain, they may change their approach.  But remember, you are probably a little oversensitive too, and the bottom line is they love you and I am sure they are very concerned and feeling powerless to know how to help you.

Best wishes

Deb

Hello Katie,

I am a parent of four adult children and I would have come up with the money if my children needed to see a physician for any reason.  I still would sell my house if one of my children needed medical care and had no way to pay. Your parents are paying because they love you.  Please don't add guilt for not having the money to pay your self. Guilt is a wasted emotion in my way of thinking.  You will make them happy just by accepting the help.

A day may come when you are in a position to pay them back.

Gentle Hugs

Respectfully
Kitt
