Lately there has been many threads posts regarding weaning or coming off of meds like ativan......... valium ........ect

Yes it can be done BUT I do strongly implore you to do this WITH a doc knowing what you are doing how you are doing it and the effects it is having on your body

I wish all the best of luck I am just kinda worried when I read ppl are going off meds with no Professional involved .........

We can give our experiences as to how we did it BUT all are differnt IMHO and need to be addressed and assessed individually....Just my 2 cents worth
yeah

Dear Friends

I agree with Lynn and feel this is a high priority topic.

Patients report experiencing all sorts of symptoms, sometimes within hours of stopping their medication. They can suffer from flu-like nausea, muscle aches, uncontrollable crying, dizziness and diarrhea. Many patients suffer “brain zaps,” bizarre and briefly overwhelming electrical sensations that propagate from the back of the head.

Though not exactly painful, they are briefly disorienting and can be terrifying to patients who don’t know what they are experiencing. There are case reports of people who have just quit antidepressants showing up in hospital emergency rooms, thinking they are suffering from seizures.Reference: MedSurg Nursing, Thomson Gale 2006

Absolutely. Nobody should discontinue any kind of medication without their doctor knowing about it, and that certainly includes psychotropic ones of every stripe! Unfortunately some doctors aren't very well versed in how to wean a patient off a benzo, but I've heard about people printing out the Ashton Manual and stuff like that for their doctors to read, and then they go with that program. Definitely involve them.

But yet in this thread, this is exactly what you're doing?
Correct me if I am wrong, are you a Dr?
If you are, my apologies

Hi,

Lyn has years of experience to share and does a wonderful job of being honest and open about her own life challenges and many accomplishments.

We are all here as members and not as professionals.

As a gentle reminder for all I am posting from our guidelines here:

4. Use good judgement.  NEVER rely on information or opinions exchanged via the forums or chat rooms to replace necessary, personal consultation(s) with qualified health or medical professionals to meet your individual health or medical needs.  Remember that what's right or has worked for one person may not be what's right for you.
Thank you in advance for reviewing this guideline.

Gentle Hugs as always
Respectfully
Kitt

I believe peacesoul's comment was directed toward me, not Lyn. I've made it very clear that people should get their medical advice from doctors. Message boards are a great place to go before you see a doctor or if one is confused about what a doctor said, because you can bounce ideas off people and figure out how to approach your doctor the next time you see him or her.

Alternatively, there are some doctors who are simply out to lunch concerning some things. I think we all know that. Message boards a good place to explore these suspicions by comparing opinions and the experience of others, and then a person can find a new doctor if they feel it's appropriate. A month or two ago there was a guy on here that was prescribed 4 mgs/day Klonopin right off the bat. Does anyone remember? If I remember that situation correctly, that person got his situation straightened out based on what was written here. This place can be very valuable in that kind of situation.

I'm doing well, all things considered.

I did something really odd yesterday...I took a nap at around 4:30 in the afternoon, thinking it would be a short one. Woke up closing in on 11 at night! So obviously I wasn't able to sleep last night. I finally did take a nap around six this morning, about the time I'd normally wake up. Then I got up at eight.

I'm really tired. It's raining like crazy outside and I drive a lot for work so I guess I'm just calling it a day. Maybe it'll stop later, but I don't know about driving while so tired. I think I'm just going to try to hold out until 9 or 10 tonight and then go to sleep. Schedule's all messed up. I feel weird.

Have also been afflicted with the dreaded vertigo the last few days. Started with the sinuses, doc said. That seems to be over but is what led to the nap yesterday.

But I'm fine. How are you?

I believe I did get your comment. There was a new one today...it's an old thread so I'm guessing it was you.

You be well, too.

Hi Lyn,

I was reading through some old posts and found this one about weeaning off meds.  I am currently on a couple of meds that I would like to be off of, but after reading this I will most definitely talk with my doc first to determine the best way to do this.  Thanks for the info, Lyn.  Your the best!!!!  yeah   yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
