One thing I have found that helps when my mouth is really dry and I feel like I can't swallow, sucking on a piece of hard candy, like a Lifesaver helps. You may want to keep a roll of Lifesavers or whatever you like with you for moments like this.
Do you have an Ipod or any kind of music device with head set..........bring that along too and you can block out the noise around you. Just sit back in your seat and let the music take you aways from the noise and keep you from watching something that causes you anxiety.

Congrats on NYC! Not sure I could handle going there. I would be terrified! Such a big place compared to what I am used to, with so many people and so much going on. I could never go there.
I take my mp3 player everywhere with me. And extra batteries. I am paranoid if my batteries run out and I have no more. I have to have my music. It helps me keep my mind off things, or away from things. In the bus situation, I would have gotten my mp3 player, turned it up so that I couldnt hear the surroundings, and closed my eyes. I do that alot. Mostly on the bus. It is so loud and so many people doing different things, saying so much at once, I cant handle it. Music helps me stay calm, if you want to put it that way. I love listening to music, its the on thing that never fails me.
I get that cant swallow feeling sometimes. Hard candy helps me. I think it would be worth trying.
