Machelle,

Yes, caffeine can contribute to anxiety. I know I have drank too much caffeine for the day when my anxiety level goes up.

Hey Machelle...I use to drink A LOT, and when I say A LOT, I mean A LOT of pepsi. It is the only thing I drank. When my anxiety got really bad in March, I quit smoking, and cut out the caffeine like all together, and it helped. I now do drink pepsi, but it is caffeine free, although I have heard talk about there still being some caffine in there, whatever, different topic, but the point is, I STRONGLY believe caffeine does make anxiety worse. Here is a story...

Back in 1998, that is when my panic 1st started EVER. I was at my parents house having a panic attack. At that time, I had NO IDEA what was going on with me, my panic attacks were not diagnosed yet. Mom called 911, as many may know the feeling, at the age of 18, I thought I was having a heart attack. Paramedics came, and asked me if the mountain dew that was on table was mine...I said yes. He started to go into saying how Mountain Dew has the highest caffeine amount in it, and could've been contributing to how I was feeling...as he was already sure I was NOT having a heart attack.

I know you didn't ask for all that, but I figured I'd give you that full blown answer.

madelineHX...welcome to healingwell, but, I am so sorry, I am not sure I understand your question...I apologize.

Best Wishes to all.

No problem for the story...LOL, and it does make total sense! I gotta say since cutting out the caffeine, I am less anxious. Too much caffeine is NO GOOD!

What about decaf coffee? I know it's not caffeine free, but has anyone had a good experience with that instead of the leaded version?

I used to drink endless cups of coffee every day ( a 250gm jar would last 2-3days max) But if i drink leaded now WOW im as anxious as anything, so i had to change to decaf which still has caffine but only 3% per kg. and now i dont have any problems, as for soft drinks, i used to drink cola, but not heaps and it never affected me... :-)

I never really drank sodas----coffee, I used to have a cup or three! BUT CHOCOLATE----now there was my caffine (sp) that put me over the top! I would eat so much chocolate---LOL---it was sick! Then, I started noticing the anxiety/high strung personality, then trembling, then acidy taste in my mouth, then sour stomach, etc.....

So, I pretty much gave up the chocolate (and when I do eat some--it's a very small amount)---I only drink half-cup of coffee each day!

You don't know how bad I want to eat chocolate! For so long, I had no problems----then BAM!!!! Many problems----

you have to remember---there's caffeine in ALOT of different things---not just coffee, and soda---but, also some teas, snacks, foods, power-drinks, etc.....

Dark chocolate's not so bad. It seems less stimulating to me, anyway. Other kinds of chocolate? No good.

Soda with caffeine is bad. Sugar is bad. I can tolerate A&W root beer...still has plenty of sugar but not caffeine. Coffee? Not in years. Wouldn't dream of it now.

I gave up the pepsi when my anxiety got bad, I still have bad anxiety though but at least my sugar levels aren't too bad.
