Sorry if this is a duplicate post, but I didn't see anything that answered my question.  I currently take Xanax .5 mg 2x a day...told my doc it really wasn't helping so he gave me a prescription for Klonopin.  Basically he just told me to take it instead of the Xanax.

So my question is this - Can I just stop the Xanax and start the Klonopin without any side effects?  I have only always taken Xanax so I am confused.  Will it do the same thing as the Xanax but just last longer?  I am so paranoid when it comes to changing anything when it comes to my meds!

Any input at all would help put my mind at ease!  (Especially since I took my last Xanax today and would have to start the Klonopin tomorrow! - Yikes!!)  eyes

Thanks again!!

I don't see why it would affect anything. It's not like a SSRI... it's just a benzo... sometimes I would miss an Ativan and my sister would give me a xanax instead... it didn't make a difference...

except they make you feel different depending on the med

Good Morning,

IMHO, you should not have a problem.

Xanax .5 mg is equal to Klonopin .5 mg in approximation.

The 1/2 life of Xanax is 6-12 hours versus the 1/2 life of Klonopin is 18-50 hours so you should get longer coverage from the Klonopin.  I am not a professional and every physician goes according to their own information, so please ask your physician if you are concerned.

I hope you do better on the Klonopin.  Take care and keep posting.

Thank you twiggy and kitt...that makes me feel better!  I just didn't know if I would have "withdrawals" from the xanax going straight to the Klonopin.  I actually found 2 Xanax's in another bottle I had in the med. cabinet so tomorrow will be the day to start the Klonopin!

Ugh, med switches always make me anxious in itself!  Again, thanks for the reassurance!
