My grandaughter who is 5 has a terrible time trying to poop. She is always bound up even though she
eats many fruits and vegs. She ended up at urgent care because it was nearly 4 days since she went and
even they had a hard time with her. 3 enemas, stool softeners and hours and hours later they sent her
home with only a tiny poop coming out. Could this be a sign of celiac? I don't know if it is that or maybe
lactose intollerance. All I know is she is hurting. She's too small to really explain what is going on with
herself so her parents get frustrated because she'll stand up and do the doo in her pants instead of
going on the toilet. Any advice? How does one get tested for this?  cry

Could be Celiac, other food sensitivities/allergies (often diagnosed as "IBS" by uninquisitive MD's), a motility problem in her rectum (pelvic floor dysfunction), behavioral constipation, or something else. A blood screening test can be done for Celiac, and if any of the anti-gliadin antibodies are elevated, then a biopsy of her small intestine will usually confirm the diagnosis if it is Celiac. Stool tests can be done to check for parasites, digestive enzyme levels, inflammation, food sensitivities, non-Celiac gluten sensitivity, etc. Alternatively, a gluten free diet could be tried for a few weeks to see what happens.

If you suspect lactose intolerance, Lactaid Milk or Lactaid enzyme supplement taken whenever something containing dairy products may help. Cheese and yogurt are lowest in lactose because the fermentation process consumes the lactose.

Dairy protein intolerance can sometimes also cause constipation. And cheese in general tends to be constipating. Yogurt is a less-constipating alternative to cheese and contains good bacteria that the GI tract needs for good health. Probiotic supplements may also be needed...especially if she has ever been on antibiotics.

Also, make sure she is getting enough fluids (highly sugared drinks and artificially sweetened sodas/drinks are not helpful as fluid intake) and exercise to stimulate and ease the passage of stool.

I've also found sometimes that glycerine suppositories sometimes help...

Ground flaxseed meal added to breakfast cereals and sprinkled over cooked vegetables may also be helpful...start with small amounts to help the body adjust to the increase in fiber.

For behavioral constipation, a set regimen of spending 1-2 specific time(s) of the day sitting on the potty for 5 minutes at a time to help retrain the body to "go" at those times. Best times to choose are right after a specific meal of the day (such as right after breakfast, and/or right after dinner), because the body is already stimulated to move things through the bowels due to the effects of eating/food in the system.

I hope this helps - take care,

Razzle,
Thanks for the post, it's been a while since I've checked this site. I usually go to the fibro site as I
have fibro and arthritis.
I've let my son know about the blood test. I'll relay it on to her mother too. I thought she ate veggies
but when I asked her she said she didn't like them. I experimented with her when I had her for a couple
of days with reflexology. I didn't have the means to try with the food, so I massaged her feet at the
trigger points for the colon. The first time she went the next day but her parents don't try anything like
this so she got bound up again. I had her again overnight and did the massaging again. Lo, and behold,
the next day at her house she did one so big they couldn't flush it. Makes me kind of wonder how
this reflexology stuff works. I'll be getting her again this weekend so I'll give it a go once more. I'm
going to teach her older sister, who's 13 how to do it and go from there.
Maybe her mom will talk this over with her pediatrician.   Thanks again.....
