Is anyone worried about the H1N1 virus having IBS? Will you get the vaccination for it?

I have several other health issues besides IBS and I am scared about this virus. I am so undecided about what I should do, get the vacine or not. Part of me wants to get the shot so I can be protected from it but another part of me is scared to get it. I really don't know what to do. Is anyone else besides me sitting on the fence?

I have made my mind up about the H1N1 vaccine, then changed it, then changed it yet again. Now I feel confident the vaccine is safe and that people should get it, if it's made possible to them. I have two daughters in college so they're my focus, and truth be told if I were standing in line for a vaccine and there were only a handful of vaccines left but a young pregnant girl wanted one, I'd let her have mine. Or a much younger person than me. I know I would.

That said, if suddenly there are more vaccines available than there are people willing to receive them, then sure I'll get one.

But it seems as if this decision has been made for me. I know my immune system is all out of whack, has been since my cancer but again, I'm 54 and there are many more younger people who really need this vaccine. One of my daughters has asthma so I keep hounding her to listen for clinics who are giving them out. So far she hasn't found one.

It is scary. Of what could happen.

For now since there's not a darn thing I can do about getting a shot, I'm just not going to worry about it.

Besides I'm going into this flu season as I've always done in the past - washing my hands, staying away from sick people, eating well, getting my rest, exercising, etc.

That's pretty much all a person can do unless of course they offer shots - tomorrow - to all of us.

- Takes Colace 50 mg each evening

HI Marsky.

We have made up our mind as well. It is being offered to us as one large group for the fire department that my husband is a captain on. It is being held next Wed, November 11th for the firemen plus their immediate family members. I am still worried about it but am more worried about the virus itself so we will get it and pray that we are fine.

We are using common sense, we wash our hands, stay away from sick people as well, trying to eat well and trying to get enough sleep. And again we are praying that we don't get it and if we do we will trust that God will get us through it.

I'm sorry that you are dealing with cancer. I wish you well.

Thanks so much for  your answer.
Connie

Hi Connie - I had cancer, 10 years ago but it was Stage 1 and surgery got it all. Thank goodness. No treatment necessary.

However, I've never been the same since my surgeries (had two). I get tired easily, I tend to bruise more easily than I remembered in the past, my legs tend to ache at times but walking on our treadmill helps. My doctor said my circulation wasn't same as before surgery. Whatever that means!

I just feel different. Always will I'm told. I'm also reconstructed, inside. When they did my colon resection (cancer was very low, in the sigmoid area), they took all of my intestines and organs out and laid them aside while they did my resection (5 hour surgery). Whatever was in the way of the area they needed to work on, they took out and laid them aside. Sometimes I wish they hadn't told me all of this! And try as they may they can't put you back exactly the way you were created. So all in all, physically I'll just never be the same as I once was.

But I am cancer free. So that's the good news. Haven't had even one benign colon polyp in over 10 years now. That's amazing to me!

Glad to hear you're getting the shot. If it were that easy for me to receive it, I'd take it. I'm just waiting until clinics are open to the general public.

Are you getting the shot for the regular seasonal flu? The H1N1 is no more dangerous than the regular flu. Tens of thousands of people die from complications of the regular seasonal flu, this one is no different.

The media hype over this flu has many people believing H1N1 is more dangerous than regular flu.

Here's a flu story for you all:

In 1994 when my oldest child was 5, I came down with the flu. I was so incredibly sick. Her sister was 2. I was a stay at home mom, my husband worked 10 hour days. I had no choice from about 7 am until 6 pm to take care of my children, while I had a fever for 8 days, cough for 3 weeks, chills, aches, severe-severe headache. In the midst of this 3 week span, I saw my internist twice. He kept saying I should have had the flu shot but it was too late. This was in January. He told me to get one every fall and never skip one. I have had a seasonal flu shot each year/fall since then. Even when they were extremely scarce, I managed to find a Kroger pharmacy giving them out. Once I ditched my grocery cart when they announced over the PA they had about 15 vaccines available. A handful of shoppers hurried over with their sleeves already pulled up. LOL After that shot I couldn't remember where I left my grocery cart. This was about 4 or 5 years ago. Oh but I found it.......so I am in favor of always getting a seasonal shot. My internist also said after I recovered from that severe case of the flu in 1994, he was watching my progress carefully. He said I was a handful of his patients who almost ended up in the hospital with pneumonia. After he told me that I was scared for what could have happened. I had two little kids to raise.

So I will get the H1N1, but only when they have enough for the general population. I still would feel so guilty if a young pregnant woman didn't receive one if I took the last one while standing in line. Once my community tells the rest of us to line up, or make appts. I'll be there.
