I am a 42 year old man currently scheduled for a partial ankle fusion in 4 weeks. It really is the final straw after 3 breaks and 20 years of pain. My question relates to activities possible after recovery. I am a big fan of Bikram yoga and wonder if anyone has successfully gotten back into yoga after undergoing a partial fusion. I understand some of the poses will be different and need to be adjusted after the surgery but wondering if anyone has succesfully gotten back into bikram heat yoga after undergoing such a traumatic surgery

Hi AIS and Welcome to HW, I have not had any type of fusion like that. Somebody may have.

Hi, I am teddybearweiser, I am a male.
I was diagnosed with crohns disease when i was admitted to the hospital

in 1992, in Jan of 1993 I was back in the hospital for surgery for my crohns. I had part of my right colon resectioned with ilecolonstomy.

I'd say its worth a try as long as you keep within your pain threshold and don't over do it. I had a shoulder reconstruction years ago and found yoga brilliant to get it moving and strong again. I did ayenga not bikram but just let my instructor know my injury and they altered some poses for me. I have lost a lot of movement in the joint but via yoga built up amazing muscle strength. Took a lot of years though, wasn't a quick fix.

Initially you may find water therapy easier to deal with. I did a physio run course and it was good to get some basic strength back. They fused the back of my shoulder so I don't have full range of movement but it gets me by.

Let us know how you go, golitho

Hi AIS,
I had both ankles fused, and started doing yoga after recovering from my surgeries. I have not tried bikram yoga yet. There are definitely some poses I cannot do because my ankles simply do not bend that way anymore, however I think I can modify or adjust most poses so they work for me. I am also still gaining strength after my surgeries and have just started practicing yoga, so perhaps in the future I will be able to do more. Good luck on your recovery!

Cakestand--Could you please share some modifications or variations of yoga poses you recommend for those with a fused ankle? I am a yoga teacher and have a new student with a fused ankle, but can find very little information about yoga with a fused ankle. Thank you for considering!
