So my mom has RA for three years and it's already too bad. Her flare ups are long and severe. She is on methotrexate, biologic, NSAIDs, and steroids and nothing's helping much. SHe has to take bionic (biologic) once a month. And this month when she took it her pain actually got worse. NSAIDs don't help with the pain anymore and as for the steroids, she shouldn't be taking them for a long time but she believes that's the only thing that helps her with the pain. SO now she has severe pain in both arms and shoulders, and feet+knees. So what can we do to make it a little better and why aren't the meds working for her?
Her diet options are also limited as she says most of the food (meat, fruits, juices and dairy) trigger her pain. Is or isn't she supposed to have green meds? And does anyone else find their pain worsened after taking fruits and dairy? Her rheumy won't help with the diet thing. Actually he won't help at all. We're trying to find another one in our city though we do have an appointment with this one in a couple of days. But I don't think it's going to be helpful.

I am sorry your mom is in so much pain despite all the meds. it can be a very tough disease. Some people do feel that dairy, gluten, processed foods, nightshade vegetables and MSG make them flare. She could try an elimination diet and add them back in one by one to see which one might be making things worse. The worst foods for me are potatoes, canned tomatoes, eggplant, MSG. Fruits don't bother me and I am lactose intolerant, so I don't eat much dairy at all. Good luck to you and your mom. I hope she gets better soon.
Sjogrens syndrome 2/15 via lip biopsy: Seronegative RA , fibromyalgia
colitis-resection 11/10, hashimoto's thyroiditis, morphea, GERD
Meds: plaquenil, synthroid, Januvia, nexium, restasis, estrogen patch, prometrium, VSL #3, evening primrose oil, Omega 3 supplement-Maxi Tears.

With the assistance of a naturopath I went on a medical foods diet removing all things that caused flare ups or other symptoms. I was basically eating just whole foods +fish, sweet potato, salad etc.
We then introduced the foods one-by-one to find which cause the flare. Orange Juice and carrots were the worst. I also had a food allergy test. Most doctors do not test for fruit so I insisted that these items be included. I worked with a doctor who specialized in allergens.
I am allergic to some fruit, nuts, milk, carrots, corn, soy etc. I can eat fruit such as peaches and apples provided that I cook them beforehand. This changes the protein and doesn't cause flare ups.
