|I found this forum when I googled "bipolar and overwhelmed with a cluttered house" and the thread hit home like a hammer. I find myself crying in the bathroom while my three boys watch tv in the room. I had put effort into trying to get areas in my house better organized and I was making head way. But after my oldest was sick recently and I was barely getting any sleep at the time, I can see how the house has once again slipped into dissarry. I feel the direct onset of anxiety and depression everytime I walk into my house. I am filled with guilt and regret and anger that my boys are surrounded by this type of environment. I am a single mom, i work fulltime with odd hours and my boys are 9 to 15 months. I am still nursing so sleep is still very broken and aside from our stupid dog, it's just us. I give my boys age appropriate chores and do not expect them to feel responsible for decluttering the house, but when they start rough housing they can reclutter an area pretty fast. |
So basically I need to stop sleeping to get anything done and I just want to reach out to those who may also be in a similiar situation of perceived impossibility....

Do not feel alone,you are trying your best.I have same problem like you but Have extreme depression,fibro,anxiety.
My cluttered bedroom gives me creeps ,I cannot walk properly.
I get more anxious but my sleep is all over place as cannot have sleep .
Anyways take it slow,start small.
I have already started on my daily small cleanings.
I won't topple and fall anymore.
With clutter disaster is waiting to happen anytime.
With kids you need to be extra careful .Give small tasks to them and just do 15 min a day one area .
In just few days you will see and feel better ,I can bet you that.
It just seems overwhelming right now.
I can relate to you.
You can do it.

|tip from the turtle. house rules list. that has rewards and consequences. it is daily, to meet a weekly target that is appropriate for each child to accomplish. then an appropriate reward. remember you mum, them kids, and if ya down and struggling, they will walk all over you. happened to my mum....it slowly escalates if not nipped in the bud. u need not want to hear her story, for u would be shocked. my compassion to you my dear friend. ht.|

And, “I work in the mental health field which is exhausting in its own right.”
I’ve been told by a psychiatrist that crying is a sign of depression.
And since you are on the bipolar forum, and looked this site up under “bipolar…and overwhelmed with house clutter”
You seem to think you have bipolar.
Are you taking anything for it?
As for the clutter and bipolar connection, I had never connected the two, but I do have a lot of clutter in my house.
Whenever I want to work on a project, I have to use my double bed, because every table top in the house is filled with junk. The only reason my bed is clear is because I have to sleep on it at might.
One thing that can work for me is that for health reasons, I sometimes have a helper in the house. If the helper says, let’s clean off the dining room table, I can assist with that and the table gets clean in a pretty short while.
Can you get anybody to help you get organized? Do you have any help from time to time? Can you get somebody to come in, maybe a relative or a home help type person, to assist you with chores?
Do you have a generally positive frame of mind? I found I was tripping myself up a lot by having a negative frame of mind, thinking that things always had to come out on the negative end for me.
They didn’t. I was just thinking that, maybe from childhood training or from bipolar, or from both.
I try to think positive now before starting in on a problem, that I can solve it, and it opens up my mind to do that. I don’t look at a pile of clothes as a defeat, I look at them as, if I feel like it, of if they have to be washed, I’ll wash them.
As far as the stupid dog is concerned, that is my laugh for the day. Send the dog my best.
As far as my dog, if it wasn’t for the dog, I probably wouldn’t get out of the house all day.
That was going to be another one of my tips, blame everything on the dog. It works. But I see you've already you used that one.

Welcome to the forum!
I am sorry for all your daily struggles. You boys are 9 to 15 months, so I know you would of recently given birth. It sounds a bit like postpartum stress following the birth which is normal for women to experience. Having 2 kids close in age gap can be a lot to handle. You really have your hands filled. Is your partner around to offer some help with the kids for you to get some rest?
Please know that you are not alone. We are all here for you. I would suggest you possible you ask your partner or a family member for some help with the kids so you can get a bit of rest. You need your rest too! Also, counselling can help as well. You can look into this.
