I have a friend who has been diagnosed with relatively mild CF and he is interested in sports. My question is, will he be able to play any, and if so, what is the limit and what adjustments will he have to make?

Everyone with CF is different. He should talk with his pulmonologist about this.
Ulcerative colitis diagnosed in 2001; symptoms as early as 1992. In remission since 2006 with Remicade.
Inflammatory osteoarthritis; osteonecrosis from steroids
Grave's disease successfully treated with radioactive iodine and now on Levothyroxine.
Type II diabetes induced by steroids.
Meds: Remicade, Colazal, Levothyroxine, Mobic, Metformin

Hi,

I'm guessing Cysticaggie is your friend? Wanted to reply to you too incase not and you dont see the other post, so I'll paste the same reply:

Hi,

Sports for people with CF are good. Anything using your arms is great as it stretches and excercises your lungs. Cross-trainers at the gym are fantastic as you're doing cardiovascular work along with arm movement. Start off slow and work up. There are people with CF who are doctors, surgeons, body builders, wrestlers. You shouldn't let it stop you.

Obviously be sensible, if you start suffering severe breathlessness, pain in chest or coughing. Stop for a bit, then start slower next time. Excercise is the number 1 best treatment for CF lungs.

If you're still unsure, ask a physio, as they'll be able to get your medical records and advise you better. But, as a general rule, lots of activity and excercise in CF makes for a healthier body and mind too.

Also, playing a musical instrument, something like the trumpet. It's hard going to start with, but I still maintain that playing a trumpet growing up, is the reason I have such good lung function at 26.

Hope this helps.

Gemma :)

If he has a Mild mutation than i would say that not only should he play sport but he should play a lot of sport. Through my fitness regime i have been able to ensure my lung function has remained excellent (around 100%) he will have to work harder than other people to get fit and maintain fitness but the benefits are well worth it.
