I rarely eat things with artificial sweetners but last Christmas I had a diet soda at a Christmas party. Boy, did that taste wonderful to me! It was the first soda I had had in over four years. I normally drink ice water or plain hot or iced tea.

I kept remembering how good that soda was so in February, when in a grocery store that has their own brand of diet sodas, I bought several cases. They had every flavor imaginable and all were good. I only drank one can a day with my dinner. I did this up until last month.

During this same period of time my blood sugar became elevated. When I would check it two hours after eating, it was 50-80 points higher than it usually was and that, of course, made my blood sugar more elevated before my next meal! My doctor and I couldn't figure out why. I hadn't eaten anything different. My past A1C was 5.7 but the A1C taken the end of May was now 6.8! I was quite upset and my doctor tried fiddling around with my medication but that didn't help either.

I never thought about the diet soda being a problem since we are told artificial sweetners do not raise blood sugar numbers but that was the only thing I did differently. So I decided to start searching to see if the diet soda possibly could be causing my problem. It was my last resort.

I came across the article that I have posted below. According to this, artificial sweetners can interfere with the gut bacteria and can raise blood sugar that way. They ran many different tests...even one where they took a fecal transplant from mice who were given artificial sweetners and transplanted them into mice who had never been given artificial sweetners. The mice who had never been given artificial sweetners had their blood sugar go up!

So, I figured I would try eliminating the one can of soda and drink ice water again. Guess what? My blood sugar has gone back down to the good levels after I eat! I know my next A1C will be much improved.

I do want to point out that I'm not suggesting that anyone go back to sodas and food sweetened with sugar. That definitely would elevate your blood sugar. I switched back to water so this did make a big difference for me.

Yes, I have also read this. Thank you for posting it. And I do know that my blood sugar will rise after using artificial sweeteners in coffee. I don't know if it's true with stevia, which is derived from an actual plant.

Even iceberg lettuce will raise your blood sugar if you eat an entire head, in fact, any food if you eat a huge amount of it at one time.

So, the best thing you can do is test and be careful of any food additive.
