Hi Angel,

Welcome to HealingWell fibromyalgia forum. I am so happy that you have joined us. You will find that the members here are so kind and compassionate.

It does sound like you could have arthritis because of the swelling of your joints. But wait until the doctor does some tests to find out. It could be something else.

Wishing you a wonderful evening,
hugs, Karen

Do you mean arthritis in general or Fibro? Does fibro cause swelling>

Hi Angeliz,

And welcome! Fibro itself does not cause swelling. It's amplified pain from muscles, tendons and the 'fibers' of the body. The areas you have pain are classic for fibro. And your description is exactly what I used to tell hubby before I got a dx...I felt like someone beat me up with a baseball bat.

I'm not a doc nor am I trying to diagnose you but something is going on to cause your pain. Feel free to hang out here and learn all you can while you are waiting for your rheumy appointment. Education is the best defense we have.

Hi, Angeliz, and welcome!  I have a big toe on one foot and a middle toe on the other foot that is swollen.  I do not have arthritis.  I think the muscles are irritated and have swollen.  So you are not a lone there.
When I first came down with fibro it started with my toes hurting, then my ankles, knees, hips back and shoulders, fingers, wrists, and when it hit my elbows, it was like I had banged the "funny bone" and I felt shocks of pain radiating from my elbows down to my fingers.  This all happened in a matter of 45 minutes while I was watching television!  The terrible elbow pain went on for over two weeks without relenting.  I was put on ibuprofen and Tylenol and that brought things under control.  So, what you are feeling can definitely be fibro.  But it's good to get checked out because fibro can mimic other things.  Hope this helps you.
I'm so glad you have joined us and I hope to hear more from you soon!

So you dont take any other drugs for anything for your fibro?

I take up to 2,400 mg of ibuprofen a day and up to 4,000 mg of extra strength Tylenol a day.  Right now I'm in my worst time of the year so I'm taking generally 1,800 mg of ibuprofen and Tylenol when needed.  I also take malic acid/magnesium supplements and they help me a lot.  It has cut down my ibuprofen a lot...except during this bad period.  I'm still taking less medication than I did before the malic acid.  In the winter I take only 600 - 1,200 mg. ibuprofen a day because of the malic acid/magnesium supplement.
I walk daily and keep moving throughout the day.  On the Fibro 101 thread, second thread at the top of the first page of the forum, there is a link to great stretching exercises.  I do these and they really do help.  Right now my shoulders are really bothering me so I'm heating up the rice bag in the microwave.  That feels so good.  Ahhh...
