Hi all: The past few years, I've had more dental issues, cavities, etc.. I brush a few times a day, avoid sweets, floss 2 times a day, get regular dental cleanings, etc.--I don't know what more I can do for my teeth. rolleyes

I also sip water throughout the day and use Biotene before bedtime and overnight if I get up. My dentist thinks it could be from the fibromyalgia itself. I'm wondering if it's from taking Flexeril and Neurontin, though my doctor has allowed me to only take small doses, as needed.

Does fibro, itself, cause dry mouth?

There are some great, helpful posts I found when I did a search here, but just wondering if anyone here currently on the forum is dealing with those issues. I'm getting older (nearly 60), so maybe that's a factor, too?

Even with insurance, dental work is so expensive, so I'm hoping to continue to gather new solutions.
Sherrine, you had a good post from (I think) 2009 that included home remedies for dry mouth. Exactly what I'm looking for--thanks! yeah

Anyone else?

Luvs, I don't think dry mouth is associated with fibromyalgia but some people with fibro also have Sjogren's Syndrome. We do have a forum on that illness so you might want to check in there with questions.

Have you checked side effects of your medications? You could ask your pharmacist also. They are quite good at knowing side effects of prescription meds.

According to the Mayo Clinic, medications and age are a couple of the causes of dry mouth. Here is the link about this problem.

I hope this helps you. I sometimes sleep with my mouth open and, boy, that totally dry mouth is so uncomfortable! Did you try any of the home remedies yet? I hope you find things to help you.

Had issues with the dry mouth before..

I relate some of it to listerine and colgate toothpaste. My dentist does not recommend either..

Thanks, Sherrine and Lj!

Sherrine: I will check out the Sjogren's forum and see what I can learn.

Yes, I did find out that both Flexeril and Neurontin have dry mouth as a side effect. sad I was also thinking that some years back, I had to take Elavil for several years for another chronic body problem. The gastro doctor chose Elavil because it is very drying! So maybe there's a connection to that, too.

I appreciate the Mayo Clinic link. I had no idea age could play a part! And oh, do I hear you about sleeping with my mouth open, and I tend to pretty much suck in air, causing more dryness.

For home remedies, I did try the gum and my body loves it when I sip water all day. I'll have to work on the others listed.

Lj: Good to know about Listerine and Colgate! I'm especially very surprised about the Colgate. I often wimp out and buy one of the cheaper brands of toothpaste, but I really should do a little more checking before I head back to Wal-Mart for more toothpaste!

Thank you both again. Have a super week! smile
