Hi everyone. I was doing some research on fibro (I haven't been diagnosed due to no insurance) and came across an article about a link between fibro and trichotillomania. I have had trich since I was 10 years old! Does anyone else here battle with it? The article says it's a fairly common occurrence to have both. I know it's often a hard subject to speak about. I avoided it for years.

Here's the link I found. http://www.fibromyalgiatreating.com/trichotillomania/amp/

I guess I should've explained trichotillomania in the original post. It does explain it in the article above but basically it's classified as OCD. It's compulsive hair pulling. I pulled out more than half the hair on my head, all my eyebrows and eyelashes at just 11/12 years old. After seeing a psychiatrist for years I gained some control but still struggle mildly to this day. I always thought it was a very rare condition but over the years have heard many people have it and to see that there is likely a link to other medical issues was very interesting to me.

I had not heard of it.wondered if its also a nerve related issue, as fibro is..

Most of us with fibromyalgia deal with more than one issue..

You need a dr.. that will work with you.., as do we all.

I've been on this forum for 12 years, hundreds of members have come on and listed all their symptoms, but never have I heard this. I googled fibro and trichotillomania and put mayo and nih after it and nothing came up with those two things together. There are some things that sound so true on the Internet but aren't true. I use sites like the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, National Instatutes of Health, etc.. when searching out things. You will get accurate info that way.

I know it can be a problem but i don't t think it is caused by fibro. Now, if you suffer from a lot of anxiety, you might display this but fibro isn't causing this. So much is blamed on fibro. Fibro affects the muscles, tendons and ligaments and can cause cognitive memory problems. Doctors think it's a neurological problem.

I sat next to a girl in sixth grade who pulled out her eyelashes. One of my childrens' friends pulled out hair in a certain area. This child got in control of this and she is married, has children of her own, and doesn't pull her hair out anymore.

So I believe this is more an anxiety, OCD issue. Here is a link by the Mayo Clinic that lists symptoms and causes. You will see that fibro isn't listed...or anything like Fibro.

Thanks Sherrine. I forget to cross check with well known reputable sites! It wasn't saying it was caused by fibro just that it might be linked. It may be that it's a form of anxiety release with some patients who also have fibro or that they may both be neurological. I don't know. 🤷🏻‍♀️
