My doctor has just started throwing around the word lupus and I'm not sure what to think. Wanted to get a feeling from those who have experienced it first hand as to whether what seems like a weird collection of symptoms I've had over the last 6months could actually be lupus as my doctor seems to suspect.

Started with chest pain approx 6 months ago. Chest CT indicates I have a hyperplasia thymus (cancer has been ruled out). Funny barking cough that they thing is the Tunis pushing on my lanygeal nerve. ANA 1:320, CPR &ESR both elevated. Most recently (last 6 weeks) I have had extreme thumb joint point and pain in my hip and now a rash that is not responding to any antifungal etc develop under my arm.

Does this actually sound like lupus or is my doctor grasping at straws.

Feeling confused

My guess is that it's your PCP (primary care physician) that you've been seeing. While they can do primary screening, they are not really capable or suitable to diagnose or treat Lupus. You need to see a rheumatologist - the Dr who specializes in Lupus and other autoimmune disorders. They are the ones to diagnose and provide systemic treatment.

To finding a Lupus knowledgeable Dr - I suggest checking with the Lupus Org at www.lupus.org to find your local chapter of the organization. Then check in with the local chapter to see which local Drs are active on the advisory board -- these are generally the Drs most interested in and most experienced with Lupus in your area.

Lupus presents in many different ways with many different symptoms. We are not Drs here, and can only guess - I would trust my Dr's guess and go ahead with finding the right Dr asap.
