my doctor just prescribed me ativan for my anxiety (0.5 mg at night) but it does not seem to make much of a difference in helping my anxiety. just wondering, what is the difference between xanax and ativan..which is better etc. and if the ativan does not seem to be working for me should I ask for a higher dosage or a difference medication? thanks!

the meds i am on in addition to ativan are: cellcept, prednisone, lisinopril, fosamax, protonix, tricor, celexa, ferrous gluconate, potassium, vitamin d, plaquenil, and coumadin

I think the best thing to do is to let the Dr know that you still have anxiety. Although we can ask for higher doses or different drugs, I prefer to let the Dr make a recommendation before I put any thoughts into his/her head.

I've found Xanax to be helpful (takes about 1/2 hr to kick in for me); I have never used Ativan. I think there are others here who have used Ativan; they'll probably be along shortly.

Take care,

I agree with lynn about talking to your doctor about this. I started taking Xanax a couple of weeks ago after stopping Klonopin and it has taken the edge off my anxiety, but I still have some jitters and plan on dicussing this with my doctor on Friday.

I have never taken ativan either, but the ones that do should come along soon to help you out, like lynn said. Good luck with this and keep us updated. You are in my prayers.

I also agree with Lynn and Babs, however, my personal experience was, I was given ativan while in hosp, and I was sure it was a placebo, because I felt no change.  Then when I started suffering from high anxiety, they switched it to xanax, and even though I am on a low dose, I find it very effective.  If you do discuss it with your doctor, ask his/her opinion about xanax and xanax ...darn..I forget the initials..I think its XR? I am going to ask mine because if that stands fror extended release, then it wud be better than reg xanax? because you wud need less dosage? oh well..I am rambling..hope this was helpful

Hi misscali, I have never taken ativan. I take .5 mil of xanax x3 daily. I was having more anxiety in the past few months and asked the doctor about it. She increased my anti depressants instead of my anxiety meds. She swears it will help but I'm still in the early stage of the increased dose so we will see.

I hope you get some answers and the right meds. I think I would rather have almost anything besides anxiety.

I just realized I need to update my signature. I was taking xanax xr which is an extended release once daily but I didn't want to be on a daily anxiety med anymore so my doc now has me on Klonopin and I do find it works a little better as it targets my immediate need when I have increased anxiety. I think its like any other med, one that works for one doesn't necessarily work for someone else and vice versa. May just need trial and error, your doc should understand.
