hi everyone!
right now im on 10 mg of prednisone and i was looking forward to dropping down to 7.5 mg this week after my doctor's approval but today when he called he said i was too anemic and if i reduced my dosage now i could end up back in the hospital....I am already taking ferrous gluconate twice a day and he told me to take it three times a day now and to take another blood test in 2 weeks.
does anyone else have any tips besides these iron supplements for increasing my iron and helping my anemia?? thank you so much!

Hi hun, no I don't but I'm sure others willbe able to help. I just wanted to say hello. I know it's frustrating to be on pred. or anothing else for that matter and not see possitive results going on. I hope the meds he increased will help along with other suggestions you'll get here.

God Bless

Hi Misscali,

I'm sorry your having a hard time with anemia. There are some foods that are rich in iron like, spinach, beets, dark grapes and so on...but of course grapes and grape juice can be high in sugar content if you are a diabetic. You can google "foods rich in Iron" and get alot of good info.  Years ago when I had my daughter, I lost alot of blood and the hospital had me drinking alot of dark grape juice.

I hope this gets better for you soon. Hang in there and take care. Keep us updated. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Yes liver is rich in Iron...My mom use to make us eat it when we were kids, so I hate it now...lol. She would batter it and fry it, like cubed steak and make gravy to go on it..of course cubed steak is much better! Good luck!

I was severely anemic at one point, and my mom made me "liver soup" and made me drink the broth. I just started coumadin as well, so I couldn't eat any dark leafy greens like spinach or it would interact with the medication. That broth was horrible, didn't taste very good, and smelled like feet. LOL.

I'm glad after a few weeks my blood counts returned to normal. But I was on iron tablets and my mom making me eat weird things to try and get back to normal.

I was diagnosed with Lupus with Antiphospholipid syndrome in Nov 05.
Current list of medications includes:

Cellcept 250mg/4 capsules twice a day, Prilosec 20mg/1 capsule once a day, Plaquenil 200mg/one tablet twice a day, Metoprolol 25mg/half tablet twice a day, Prednisone 10mg/one tablet once a day, Coumadin as directed, Tetracycline 250mg/ two capsules twice a day

Avita cream, Clindamycin lotion, triamcinolone ointment daily to control skin rashes.

Rituxan infusions twice every six months

I guess I'm one of the few. I actually like liver. LOL. I didn't like it when my mom made it when we were kids. It was kind of like shoe leather. After the childhood liver trauma wore off I tried some in a resteraunt a friend was eating. I really liked it. Now I make it about once a month. beef liver and chiken livers. as long as you don't over cook it I really like it.
hugs again

I have always been concerned about my iron levels as well but I am so sensitive to iron supplements. Makes me really sick to my stomach so I don't take them and I make sure my supplements don't have iron in them. I also suffer from IBS w/ constipation so I know that iron pills would not be a good idea anyway. I'm sure iron from food is better anyway but I don't do liver. My mother used to try to make me eat it as a child as well and I wouldn't but I would go to bed hungry.

Babs, I will take your advice and google "iron rich foods"... Thanks :)

Guess I'm weird like Okie/Carol. I like liver. Beef liver & onions is a good dish, and chicken livers are good fried, broiled, or baked. Broiled wrapped in bacon is probably my favorite.

Never had a medical prescription for them, though! (TeeHee)

LOL Lynn!

I do like chicken livers fried, but haven't had them in a long time. They use to sell them at KFC years ago and they were really good. Lol Carol, I like the "childhood liver trauma!" I guess I'm still suffering from it..lol.

I have a quick question. I became anemic after I had my son 8 months ago. Since then I have been taking iron pills daily and vitamin pills daily, needless to say my iron has not gone up since and also the fact that I have not been able to gain any weight back. I am 5 foot tall and weigh 94 pounds. Starting to get a little worried. Any suggestions!

Hi Simmy,
Welcome to the forum. I'm sorry your having problems with anemia and wt loss. You are a very petite lady. I hope your doctor can find the source of your anemia and wt loss soon. I'm sorry I don't have any other suggestions other than the ones that have already been posted on this topic. Do you have lupus or any other Immune disorder? Anemia is fairly common in these diseases as well as others diseases. Hopefully, your doctor will do more investigating and can get your iron levels up.
