|I hope you all don't mind the forum newbie bombarding you with all the new posts!!!
I was wondering if/how your nutrition/diet has changed since being diagnosed with Lupus?
I know that when I was diagnosed, I had to dramatically revamp my diet. I was only 17 when I was told I had SLE (the year was 1999 - the summer before my senior year in High School), so my "normal teenager" diet of pizza and cookies and whatever else I felt like, was quickly replaced by a much more healthy fare. At the time my Mom read up on all the "joint-friendly" foods (ie. salmon, pineapple, flaxseed etc.). I switched to a mainly vegetable-based diet (I still ate chicken from time to time, but never ate red meat), with lots of organic soups, salads, flaxseed bread, and NOTHING with MSG. I had quickly learned the hardway that MSG caused me to flareup.
During my remission (if that's what you would call it), I began to eat a less strict diet. MSG no longer bothered me, I began to eat some red meat, and even junk food from time to time.
Now due to my recent flare I have decided to go back to a more strict, healthy, and (mostly) organic diet. I truly beleive my healthy diet is what helped me during my original flareup. I just found out last night that once again, I can no longer consume anything with MSG.
My other question to you all is, do you know of any foods people with Lupus should avoid or not avoid (or is it all dependant on the individual?)

|I don't know too much on this subject however I have heard many times to avoid alfalfa sprouts w/ Lupus. I never thought I would miss them, but I do miss that turkey avocado and sprouts sandwich :)|
I also have IBS so my diet is very strict anyways but I have found since I have been sick and have lost a lot of my appetite, I don't have the taste for rich foods anymore. Don't get me wrong, I don't go totally bland. But I stay away from sauces and creamy stuff and now just mostly sprinkle a bit of salt and pepper for taste. Good and bad in a way I guess.

|Jen, I've read a little bit about lupus and nutrition. I was pretty much a health fanatic before getting lupus and ate mostly whole and healthy foods. The bad thing is that since I have gotten sick, I've noticed that my stomach can't handle a lot of the things I used to eat, especially a lot of the veggies I used to eat.|
I have read that nightshade plants can aggrevate some people's lupus symptoms as well as some sprouts. Some people, including myself, can't tollerate artificial sweetners - they make me feel really sick. I feel sick with msg too.
I'm guessing that we are all a little different in how we react to food.
This is a good topic and I'll be interested to see what others have to say about it.

I used to eat a much more cruciferous diet, but since my digestive system has taken such a hit from the Lupus, I cant eat the raw, fresh foods anymore. Its hard to balance the foods I can actually tolerate with foods that are good for me. I have finally found a delicate balance, but the slightest thing tips the scale. I have to stay away from lettuce, completely raw foods, cabbage, red meats, chicken that has any hormones whatsoever, MSG, carbonated beverages, and artificial sweeteners, oh and anything high in fat since it aggravates my pancreas. Like I said, its hard to find things I actually can eat.
I still drink caffeinated coffe, but I make it very weak and only drink it in the mornings. I missed it so much that I decided it was just one of those thigns I could not do without. I miss salads terribly, and sometimes still have a small one, especially if its early in the day.
I have found that if I consume most of my food early, and only eat very lightly and not past six oclock, that my symptoms are not quite as bad.
Its a balancing act that I think we all go through at some point.

|Jen, like Hippimom said, I've heard nightshade veggies are not good for lupus. I've also heard pork is bad for joint pain, but each person is different. Victoria, you and I are a lot alike. I am on a gluten free diet so already my diet is even more limited than most. There have been times I've eaten veggies or fruit or whatever 2 days in a row and my system went crazy! I can never eat too much of anything, my rheumy increased my Imuran last year and that seemed to help a little so I still have to be very careful with my diet. I am like you I LOVE salads and wish I could eat them every day, but can't.

I agree this is an interesting topic. I'm not much help with this subject. My diet varies from day to day. I do have to avoid alot of foods though like, nuts, seeds, popcorn, some fruits, lettuce, raw veggies, and foods high in fiber.
I have never been much of a red meat eater. I will take a couple of bites when I cook it for my family. I try to eat alot of cooked veggies, baked chicken, rice or potatoes on the days I'm not nauseous. Potatoes are in the "night shade" catagory but, they are easy on my stomach. On the days my stomach is upset I have to stick with cereal, crackers and sprite.
Artificial sweetners give me terrible headaches so I drink the good stuff....coke, sprite and sweet tea. I need to drink water but I have a hard time getting that down for some reason.
Good luck finding the diet that works best for you. Post all you want and ask all the questions you want. Sorry, I wasn't much help here. The others had some good advice for you. Take care and keep us updated.
