|I was diagnosed with Lyme disease last year and am currently on IV antibiotics. I have read that some medications can cause lupus symptoms. I cannot understand where this skin complaint I have comes from and I wonder if somewhere along the line my lyme or mycoplasma infections could have triggered this disease. I am going to copy a thread that I posted on the Lyme board and would appreciate any input from yourselves on the skin condition. I also was diagnosed last year with a benign brain tumor that has to be adresses later this year with radiation...Bit of a tough year to say the least!
For the last 2 wks I have has a strange rash on my hands and face. I spoke on the phone to my LLD and she said that it may be my doxy. Because I have to pay 170.00 to go visit, I thought I would run upto the urgent care and just have the dr take a look. She had no idea...great!
The strange thing is that I had this rash once before on my face not on the hands before I ever took antibiotics when I was first sick. It looks like long rings and it is on my nose and then it very very red and raw and then the redness goes and I am left with a dry flaky patch that leaves almost small scars they are not all the same size some are small others are quite large....It does clear up but is bizzare. They are sometimes kind of cigar shaped...white scaly patches amongst raw looking skin... Last time it was on my nose and cheeks, this time I looked like Rudolph as it was just the end of my nose...The circles almost look blister like the borders are kind of red and quite defined without any oozing...I did make an appointment for a derm on Friday and cancelled as it was clearing up...then sods law it started again friday afternoon on my hands.
You know what it is like we go to the doctors so much at one point to get the diagnosis that I could just not bear another visit to anyone other than my lyme dr...
My hands on the other hand are purple/red rash on the knuckles and up to the finger joints. The skin is not broken or chapped at all it is all under the skin it seems. It is one hand mostly and it itches like the dickens and I spend a lot of time scratching even with creams. It began as a burning and swelling and it really felt as though I had scalded my hand that lasted a week and then began itching and now it has all purple spots under the skin. I think it is clearing up but it comes and goes. The fingers are painful as they are swollen and I did have it on my toes a little too....
Any ideas? Could it be Rocephin or Doxy? It is just strange that I had it once before and have the rings left from the last time. This time was far more red and firey though...

|Hi Carolyn, I really have never had to deal with rashes but I' sure somone will come along sooon and give you some incite. It sounds just aweful though. (hugs). I have had water blisters on my fingers from doxy before. But you said you had it even when you wern't taking antibiotics so I wouldn't think that was the cause. Anyway I know I'm no help I just wanted to say hello and I hope you can some answers soon. |

I'm sorry to hear you have been through so much in the last year. I'm probably not going to be much help with this either. I do get rashes from time to time but, have never had them on my hands. I do get swollen finger joints that can turn red and have alot of heat from RA.
There are several types of rashes associated with lupus. When I get rashes they are usually on my face, forearms, upper chest and thighs after being in the sun. Mine itch really bad but, don't leave scars. Discoid lupus can leave scars though. I hope you will see the dermologist about this and get a biopsy to see what this could be. Take a picture of your rash in case it is gone before you see the doctor.
Hopefully, someone with better answers will come along soon. Good luck with this and please let us know what you find out. You can also look at www.lupus.org
at pics of different rashes to see if yours looks like any of them.
Please take care. I hope you get some answers and relief soon. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

|The kind of rashes that I get on my hands which my doc says are Lupus related are in between my knuckles. They itch will itch really bad. I am also very sensitive to any type of chemicals on my hands so I MUST wear gloves anytime I clean (even dish soap and washing dishes). I would definitely take a picture of it when its there and if it comes back again, make another appt with the dermy and have those pics ready in case it clears up again.|
