|Question for all you SCD'ers...|
I've been following a strict SCD diet for a couple months now. I really think it has helped. It reduced bathroom trips from 12-14 to an average of about 8. about 2 weeks ago I started Remicade which also seems to be helping. I'm not 100%, but I'm only using the restroom about 4 times daily right now. This is a huge improvement for me.
I'm a consultant and I often have to travel for work. Luckily the last couple months I've been located in-town and I've been able to support cooking. I have not had any food that I haven't prepared myself.
Work needs to send me to Italy for a couple weeks. This is a great opportunity, but I'll be hotel bound and will have to eat all meals at restaurants. How have other SCD'ers handled this? Is it enough to simply try to avoid all the usual illegals to the best of my ability? Stick to meat and cooked veggies, skip pasta, pizza (sigh), etc. Sounds like a waste of a trip to Italy, but I also won't be much good if I can't leave the hotel.
Or do I just rely on the Remicade and throw caution to the wind? I appreciate the input from the SCD'ers out there who are more experienced than me.

|I would like to encourage you to stick to the diet. But that's up to you. If you think you're feeling better on Remicade, try one new food at a time and keep a food journal to track your health.|

|Italian food is not all about pasta and pizza. They make fantastic meat dishes and seafood dishes and great veggies. I don't think you will feel deprived by sticking with protein and veggies and skipping the pasta. But maybe you're looking the excuse of it being "Italy" to indulge? It won't kill you but will you be able to enjoy sightseeing if your symptoms re-occur?|
Have a small piece of pizza so you don't feel deprived if you need/want to. No one will be looking over your shoulder. It's your life, you get to decide how to live and eat. When I felt like cheating on my modified SCD plan I usually waited until I didn't have much going on the next day in case my gut rebelled but I never ate "off-list" food for several days in a row therefore didn't usually have bad results.
Now if you said France and you needed to have bread and croissants then I could sympathise with you. Pasta? Not even on my radar. We all have our hot buttons
Current diet=SCD+Paleo modified (some fruit+dairy OK now)
In remission April 2010 after 10 years of UC with no remission ever
Jan 2010 began SpecCarbDiet (modified to remove dairy, fruit & juices,)
Gluten-free=bleeding stopped in 3 days, 95% remission in 5.5 months on SCD

Congratulations on your improvements. Your success makes me even more curious about SCD. I've been looking at it a lot but I haven't taken the plunge.
I feel your dilemma and I'm sure you can come up with a suitable comprimise. I am trying to stick with real, unprocessed food while I experiment to find out which foods are possibly not working for me. Since I've been able to stick with being gluten free for a number of weeks/months now, I notice that I'm feeling better all the time. It might be similar to what you are experiencing with SCD. There are probably a lot of really great foods that will fit in your plan in Italy.
Anyways, one of the websites I look at called SCD lifestyle happens to have a 'travel class' that sounds like it gives some really practical guidelines for being on the road while keeping SCD compliant. There's some cost involved but it might end up being really valuable to you. There's a risk free money back guarantee too. I almost signed up for it today eventhough I don't specifically follow SCD, so that's why your post caught my attention.

|UC_Spartan, good for you giving the SCD diet a good whirl to see how it helps you. I was almost in the exact same scnario a few months ago, but my trip got canceled. I would say you should be okay if you avoid sugary foods. Sugar is the #1 inflammatory ingredient/food. You don't necessarily need meat to feel full, if you want it though, eat it. I'm surprised that you are still going 4 times a day, is there still blood/looseness if you dont mind me asking?|
I wouldn't go from one extreme to the other, because you'll probably end up burning yourself out, but if you indulge in a few extras here and there, you should be okay, i'm sure you will be distracted with business and the new location for a bit anyway. :)

|UC Spartan- Do a search for Dfdavedf on HW and send him an email. He follows the SCD to a science and has went on trips overseas while on SCD. He would say that it was easy for him to follow the SCD overseas because he would personally meet with the chef at the resturaunt and tell him what his diet consisted of and the chefs would go out of their way to make him something special following the diet principles. |

I would prefer to actually not use the excuse to indulge... I guess I'm just a bit overwhelmed at the thought of being away from the kitchen and what I've worked out as "safe". I haven't eaten a single meal out, or participated in a single meal at a restaurant, in two months since I started because I'm worried about illegals, etc. So if I can't figure it out in my own town - I'm a little intimidated by figuring it out in a foreign country, with language barrier, etc. I think what I'll have to do is just look at the main ingredients and make sure they seem mostly legal (non pasta, bead based, etc.). Hopefully that will be "close enough". It just seems like SCD, or die hard SCD'ers, seem to take an all or nothing type approach.
Two of the four are in the morning pretty close together. I'm sleeping through the night finally. So one at work and late evening is still fantastic. Still, I agree - less would be better but that makes me feel greedy. Still somewhat loose, but they are starting to improve. I've never had blood or really mucus for that matter. My GI is always surprised by that since they've seen full pancolitis on my scopes. My symptoms were always looseness, D, frequency (20+ at my worst), and the one that made me start with the heave drugs - urgency.
