I woke up this morning and my right index finger was joint was so swollen and painful...I could barely bend my finger and to touch it is painful.  To bend it is painful.  It is swollen from the top (fingernail end) down to the knuckle of the palm of my hand.  I remember waking up quite a few times last night thinking my finger really hurts.  When I first got symptoms of arthritis, my left index finger was hurting like this and tender, but not swollen.  I am on 6 tablets of MTX a week, should this still be happening?  Does this mean my arthritis is not responding to the meds anymore.  The MTX helps a lot with the pain and stiffness since I started it.  I am hoping it doesn't stop working. My fingers and knees ache a little in general, but I don't ever have visible swelling like this, just the swelling only my rhuematologist can feel when he squishes my knuckles.......Any input??

Hmmm... it could be the arthritis but is it possible you broke your finger. I woke up one morning with my middle finger of my right hand so swollen I could not use it to get dressed (since my left elbow wouldn't bend at the time I had fun that morning) but only the knuckle was swollen. I have never had arthritis affect my whole finger like that (doesn't mean it can't happen of course).

I don't think I broke it. I didn't do anything yesterday that would have...maybe in my sleep? Wouldn't that hurt, though? I snapped my toe once and that was excruciating for days and all different colors. That sucks about your elbow. That would be hard to do much. Guess if I start having those problems, I know who to ask for tips!! Thanks!

I know this is a little late, but I would suggest seeing a DR for an xray of that finger. Any brand new symptom should be reported, and I would worry about a blockage of some type of draining.  (I still don't know enough about RA to know what is happening)

Hairline fractures can occur in your sleep, as well as stress fractures if you bent it long enough (under your pillow).  if you take sleeping meds, and still woke up to notice pain in your finger, that was probably significant pain- even though you didn't notice it much.

I would suggest it is at least worth a phone call so that the DR can decide if she wants to see it or not.  They would want a description of size and color.  Good luck, and I hope this message is a day too late and the swelling is already gone.

When you cannot stand, on whom do you lean?
