My wife has had this joint (wrist and elbow) pain and some unexplained itchy rash over her body for several days.  She will see a rheumatologist for the first time, probably in a couple of months or longer.  But we did a self-diagnosis during the meantime and she appears to have rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as she had joint pain when she was a child and the pain has come back to her.

She used Tylenol for pain, which helped a a lot.  But once she stopped taking Tylenol, the pain reappeared.  So she may want to try OTC NSAID such as Motrin or Advil.  My question is:

(1) Will Advil or Motrin induce remission for at least a couple of months so that once she stopped Advil, the pain will not come back.  How long will she have to take Advil to have a remission?

(2) From your personal experience, once you take NSAID to get into remission (pain free), how long will it last?

Any advice will be appreciated.  Thank you.

P.S. I have Crohn's Disease so I don't know much about RA.

Diagnosed with CD in 1994;

In 1994 I was treated with Pentasa of no avail.  Have being treated with Chinese herbal medicines for over 10 years.

Hi. I am on remicade and celebrex . I have OS, RA, and Crohn's disease. I have to use vicodin if my pain gets real bad. Remicade also works for RA.
Hi, I am teddybearweiser, I am a male.
I was diagnosed with crohns disease when i was admitted to the hospital

The NSAIDS will not induce remission. They need to be taken consistently and at doses a doctor should prescribe in order to reduce the inflamation in the joints and keep the inflamation at bay. If this is RA she will probably need the DMARDS (plaquenil, methotrexate) or biologics (enbrel, remicade) to induce a remission.
Good luck and get in to see the rhuematologist as soon as possible.

Hi , I am basically new here too. But I just wanted to tell you my doctors told me to stay away from Advil and Motrin...and told me to take Tylenol. I took extra strength. I think there is an arthritis tylenol as well.
I have seen a rhuematologist since, and am currently taking plaquenil. If at all possible maybe your wife could find out about getting something like that. Plaquenil is NOT taking all the pain away, but I definitely know if I miss more than one day of it....(I had missed a day because of forgetting, then I had missed like 3 days in a row because I didnt have any and was waiting on getting my refill....)
Tylenol helps to ease pain a bit...
Good Luck and I hope your wife will be able to see a rhuematologist very soon to get the help she needs.

I am on celebrex and that helps, as I have OA of my hips, and I am almost 36 years old.  Also tell her to try and stay out of the cold weather.  When I am outside, I wear skipants to protect my joints.  If I do not wear my skipants or wear layers up on layers of clothes, than I am in alot of pain.  When I am in pain I take Tylenol Arthritis and that helps
