My 9 yo son was diagnosed with JRA on Nov 4th.  He had a swollen knee that would not go away!   We brought him to his pedi and they referred him to an ortho who in turn could find nothing wrong.  So then we were sent to the Director of Rheumatology at the Shriners Hospital.  She diagnosed him with JRA in his right ankle, right wrist, right ring finger and his left knee.

She put him on naproxen 250 mg x 2.  It really has not done anything for the swelling but I think it is helping with the pain. We went back on Nov 26th and it has now spread into his left wrist.  So she now has him on folic acid and methotrexate.  (15 mg of metho given once a week) and we have joint injections scheduled for tomorrow Dec 3rd.

I guess my question is what do I expect at the joint injections.  They did tell me they put him under for it because they are doing several joints.  We have to be there for 6AM. And they said we should be able to leave early afternoon.  Will he be uncomfortable the next day?  Will the injection sites hurt??  I am sorry for all the questions but this is so new to me!

Thanks for the help.

I'm an adult so don't know if it's the same for a child, but when I have injections I am stiff for a day or two then its absolutely wonderful for about three weeks!!! But I know some people get much longer relief, if he is starting on mtx as well, it will hopefully tide him over until the mtx kicks in, goodluck.
