I have had bursitis in many joints including Trochanteric bursitis. My rheumatologist has injected mine a couple times. My rheumy uses ultrasound to diagnose it. However, not many US docs use ultrasound technology for that. Otherwise, an MRI would best diagnosis the problem. If you can't see a rheumy then an ortho doc should be able to help.
