I noticed some of the forum moderators have Akylosing Spondolitis ( sorry for spelling).. I just wanted to know how were you dx'd? Was it a blood test or did the doc go by symptoms? I was told i may have this, but the rhuemy i see now hasn't come out to say yes or no on it.
Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it!! Laura :-)

Hi gonuts,
I'm not a moderator but do have AS.  It took 6 months to find out what was wrong having had anti-inflammatory drugs, physio, and much more through my GP.  I got to a place where I insisted on seeing a Rheumy and once there he asked many questions (some I thought were most strange) examined me fully, sent me for blood tests and masses of x-rays that were then sent to a radiologist specialist.  The answers to his questions pretty much confirmed it and that's why he sent me for the x rays which were graded and confirmed AS (along with blood tests showing HLB27).  I think I was just lucky that I was sent to a rheumy that specialised in AS.  It appears I've had it over 7 years but only confirmed for 2 years. Unfortunately it's progressing very quickly and we've run out of ideas on how to slow it down.  Hope this helps a little.

Hi Laura,

I was diagnosed pretty much the same way as Peggy, except Im not HLA B27 positive, mine was brought on by Crohn's Disease. These auto-immune diseases like to add to each other, as if one isnt bad enough eheyes  Good luck in your quest to find out what is wrong, make sure you push your Rheumy till you do find out.

I was also pretty much diagnosed the same was as Peggy and Jo except my sacroilitis did not show on xray but did on MRI. I am HLA B27+ and also have Crohn's disease. I actually think my GI inflammation might be more the result of the AS, rather than Crohn's.

Prior to getting on biologic medications I had lots of enthesitis in many tendons - shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, and Achilles. Because of the repeated bouts of enthesitis, many of my tendons are calcified at the insertion points into the bones. This causes me difficulty, especially in the Achilles that are calcified three inches up from my heels. I get lots of pain there if I walk too quickly - running is out of the question.
