I was diagnosed with RA about a month ago.  My Dr. says I'm in the beginning stages and has prescribed me Phentenil(?), meloxicam, and prednisone.  It seems to have started in my right index finger with it being swollen and hurting just below the finger in the palm area. Also, I thought I had injured my left elbow by lifting too heavy, but he now believes instead of tennis elbow its also attributed to the RA.  Another issue that I've had longer(2 yrs., or so), which my Dr. says is another connection to autoimmune disease, is dry mouth and dry cough(sjogrens syndrome).  I was never diagnosed with it, but my Dr. believes I probably do have it by my symptoms.
Okay. . .taking a long time to get to the point, but ever since I was diagnosed and started the meds. it seems  I am quickly having flare ups in other parts of my body.  Since taking the meds. I don't have much swelling, but by evening and through the night I ache and have night sweats.  Could I maybe be further along???  Pam

The main reason they diagnosed me was because I had pain in my wrists mostly in the morning when I first wake up for a few hours and the arthritis was very I find it strange that yours doesn't sound that right index finger also was the first to be affected and now it is slightly crooked...I was diagnosed in Septmeber of last year and would say that the symptoms started the June before. The started me out with methotrexate with from what I understand is what they start everyone on...maybe not. I will admit that once they diagnosed me the symptoms got worse before they got better...much much worse...I couldn't even wash my hair in the thats the only reason the Dr. put me on prednisone which was for the pain...once the methatrexate kicked in I didn't even need the steroid so I took myself off of it...I don't take anything for pain anymore just the methatrexate once a week..although my RA sounds different then yours...Now let me get to your think that once I found out what I actually had I did get alot worse before I got new body parts flared up but the pain was just unreal...but thankfully that has changed and for the most part I feel so much better...just tired....It takes a little while for the meds to kick in probably around the 3 month mark I felt my best after the Dr. tweeked my med a bit...anyway I hope you feel better and good luck

Hi Pam and welcome to HW and the RA forumsmilewinkgrin

My RA got worse before the meds kicked in.

Sometimes it takes a different combo of meds to get relief, so there is all the trying new meds, waiting etc.

Give your meds sometime to kick in and if you are no better, see Rheumy about other meds to try.

Good luck and keep us posted.
