John Deere,

it sounds as if you have a serious serious condition. Reiter's syndrome is a reactive arthritis and YES you do get it from an infection. it can be any infection. but usually it is from a chlamydial, gonorrheal, etc...infections. it is very painful and needs treatment.
the burning sensation is typical of urethritis and prostitis.
are you still taking antibiotics? did you see an infectious disease doc yet?
it sounds as if the infection is still active.
any infection left untreated will eventually end up in an arthritis...even those like syphylis and Lyme's too.
i would also consult with a rheumatologist.
there are health clinics where docs treat people who have contracted an STD for little or no cost.
be sure to monitor your temperature frequently and drink clear fluids and when you feel the urge to so and don't hold it.
if it gets bad go to the ER if you have to.
i will do a little more research on this and write back again.
i'm a nursing student and am specific to rheumatics and infectious disease.
i know how painful this must be.
can you take Tylenol in the meantime??
take good care & will talk to you soon.
my prayers are with you

hi john,
i did a little more looking into the symptoms you described and compared them to what i have in my medical books.
the Reiter's is consistant with urethritis first, it can also affect all the conjuctiva membranes (your eyes) and end in arthritis. the most frequent cause is chlamydia. recurrences are very very you may need to get to a doc ASAP. erythromycin and tetracylcline antibiotics are usually prescribed.
with the pain you are describing, it sounds as if it is affecting perhaps the prostate (causing testicular pain).
thinking about it...if i were you i would find a clininc specializing in treating and or is familiar with chlamydial infections. the arthritis is treated as it is symptomatic.
a new work up and more aggressive treatment may be needed for you.
hang in there.

Erin, I too researched this and came up with the same findings.
Don't walk in front of me....I may not follow
Don't walk behind me....I may not lead
Walk beside me..and be my friend...

thanks Flop!
i could list some nursing interventions but i really think he should be seen by a doc to further rule out infections and also epididymitis and prostatitis. both of which can be caused by chlamydial infections.
this is way too long to suffer.
john, let us know how you are doing....or if there is anything we can do to help you maybe find a place closer to where you live.
best wishes
