For 3 years my GP and RA doc told me I had Polymyalgia Rheumatica. Doses between 5 to 20 mg managed it throughout that time. Two months ago, the specialist decided I have Seronegative RA. He insists on putting me on Methotrexate as he is "worried" about me staying on prednisone. I am being weaned off it and currently taking 12 mgs and not experiencing any RA symptoms. MAYBE a swollen finger or a tender wrist here and there. Scouring forums and such I am noticing that folks with RA are being put on a combination of prednisone and methotrexate. It seems to be the standard. I am confused and scared to death to take metho. If my doc is so worried than why didn't he order a bone density test and a cardio stress test? If my body is handling the prednisone than why add this seemingly awful drug? I know, this is a question the doctor should handle but he was such a jerk to me my last visit that I am in the middle of getting a new specialist.

Hello, if in fact you have RA, DMARDS such as methotrexate are prescribed. The only time prednisone is used is for a short term until the methotrexate kicks in. I suggest that you go to your pcp & ask for a bone density scan to make sure you do not have osteoporosis as a result of the use of prednisone.

I agree with you it's time to see a new rheumatologist. Take care.
