Hi Everyone. Yeah, this is a weird one. I have one nail in which the nail plate (the top hard shell) has fallen off. The same toe did this last year and last week it happened again. Now the nail on the toe next to it is lifting off. I mentioned it to my rheumy, who I saw Monday, and he asked if he could see it. Sure. He looked and said he had no idea what could be causing it. There's no apparent fungus or bacteria. That little puppy is as clean as a newborn's bottom. It certainly isn't serious, but it is tender. Anyone have any thoughts? Love, Butterflake

Hum. Didn't you say once that your fingernails flake horribly? Or was it that they "overgrew"? Can't remember...

I wonder if you are getting enough Biotin (eggs, beans) and Beta arotene (carrots, almonds, fish)? Calcium and Folic Acid also support nail growth.

Or maybe too much Keratine? It's actually a condition called "Keratosis Pilaris"...I can only find website that mention skin manifestations but surely that would apply to nails as well.

My bet? It's too much or too little of something! LOL! Helpful, aren't I?

Dear, you are the most helpful woman I know :-) Yeah, my fingernails still get ingrown and I have a nightly ritual to keep them infection free. BTW, rheumy told me to use bacitracin not Neosporin because 10% of population is allergic to Neosporin. I'm on calcium overload, but I definitely could use biotin and beta carotene. I've never even heard of keratine so I gotta investigate that one! Thanks for the input!!  Love Ya, Butterflake

Found this on another discussion board -

From another discussion board said...
I have a nail that has lifted off the bed. It is called Oncholysis. It happens with autoimmune diseases. It's gross. It is trying to grow out, part of it, tacked itself back on and is pink now. I have been dealing with this for two years.

So I looked up Oncholysis and this is the best explanation I saw -

Looks like it is usually diagnosed by a dermatologist....

(Oh, goody, another Dr!)

Body paint instead of nail polish?
