I am currently in an outpatient program and will be seeing my pdoc in the next 2 days. I talked with the therapist about depakote and scared of getting pregnant while on it. I do not plan on it and am talking precautions with my husband so that dosen't happen but there is always a chance. I would like to know so alternativesto the depakote er. I talk 1500 mgs of the depakote at bed time, 100 mg seroquel in the morning , 100 mg in the evening, 400 mg at bedtime. This combo is working and I hate to screw with it but the stress of the risk I am taking is too much. Please give me some suggestions so I can research them before I go in tomorrow. I want to be prepared. Thanks in advance for any help someone can give.

lol. I just haven't got a useful answer for you, Lost. i'm not a doctor so I don't know what reasonable alternatives to depakote are. All the meds have specific properties docs consider when prescribing them -- For instance, lamictal tends to have slight anti-depressant qualities. I'm just not well versed in the anti-psychs. Sorry.

well for all those so obviously interested she is keeping me on them till I am more stable. I recently started taking my meds again so I am trying to get to a safe place mentally. I'm not being mean, just sarcastic :)

I am in a similar boat, just had a relapse manic episode and put back on depakote (no other meds). my husband and i WANT to get pregnant within the next year, so I am looking into alternatives as well. this summer I may be switching to lithium. the one huge piece of advice i have gotten in the meantime is to take 4mg of folic acid, which I ended up getting a prescription for, since OTC they come in 800mcg. I am in the process of outpatient, being linked up with a new pdoc who specialized in female mental wellnes... "gynochiatry" as she calls it. Also, Harvard med female mental health website may have some info. good luck
