I went into hospital november 2007 and was discharged in april this year! YAY! It was difficult but i made it through. i was diagnosed with bipolar this year and was also treated for psychosis. I am Currently on 225mg venlafaxine, 500mg seroquel, and zopiclone to help me sleep. ( although i dont take it every night).
It was a rough time going into hospital as i didnt really know i was "ill". But thankfully my friends and family had me admitted. However i wasnt thankful at the time lol.
I have irritable highs and really bad lows but am currently doing a relapse prevention plan which is helping me deal with different things.
I did try ECT which is electro convulsive therapy, i only had 3 treatments as i dont like having anaesthetics. It didnt hurt and it didnt last for long however sometimes i would get a headache afterwards and had some short term memory loss.(i had a bad memory any way lol).
I have now been out of hospital nearly 5 weeks and doing quite well. i still have bad days but am learning to cope with them using different techniques.
Now i am going to study for a nail technician diploma to keep me occupied and give me something to work for.
i hope this post gives some people a little bit of hope that are struggling.
One thing that keeps me going is to say to myself "I am not an illness...I am a PERSON...I wont let it win".
Big Hug to anyone out there that needs 1 x

I am appaled that they didn't treat your headaches. I always was given intranasal sumtriptan following ECT (after I woke up) and then A medications that contain tylenol, motrin, & caffiene. (Basically its the same as Excedrin Headache, but presciption srtrength.) I also took a benzo to help me sleep, and was told to sleep for two hours to prevent headache and memory loss. I neve had headaches and my memory already sucks, but I stil remember my first ECT after my daughter was born and her labor and birth than I do my son's (off meds and no ECT.) I had Ect to stay of meds during pregnancy and after so I could breastfeed. I may have bad genes, but that is only part of what goes into our illness. I know I would still be sick , but not for some experiences, I might be more eqipted to survive in the outside world and do things like get a job or shop by myself. BEsides it is good in helping a sick mom bond with an innocent child. I

I'vew had four groups of ECT, bilateral (both hemishperes, 12-16 times a group. AS you can see, I am prone to using ECTwhen every other thing has failed or during pregnancy. Although the first time it was court ordered!

Hi CloudySky,

It's nice to meet you, welcome to the board.

Sounds like you had a long stay in the hospital and it must feel good to be out now. I'm sure things aren't 100% perfect -- they just won't be no matter what -- but you sound pretty good. Keep up the good work. Good luck studying to be a nail technician. It's nice to have you around. Jump right in the discussion!
