Bipolar I or II

I am due to see my new PDOC in September. I am currently on lamictal and lexapro. doing ok but just not quite right.
I have been trying to find information on the differant medicines used to treat BP I or II.
Are the same. I read somethings that just say BP I , uses this medicine.
I am from what I understand DXD with BP II.
I know everyone reacts not the same to meds but just wondering on this.

Hi! Welcome! Glad you are here.

I am Bipolar II but I am also a rapid cycler so antidepressants do not work for me. So I have been doing well on Tegretol and Seroquel for 3 years now. Also, I have had two pregnancies during that time and had to come off of the Tegretol some during those periods but when I am on it, I do really well. Also, I have noticed that I feel even better when I exercise and get plenty of sunlight (just some little extras that I can do to help myself out). I also take Ativan for anxiety/panic attacks which works for me too most of the time.

So that is what I take. Like you said, not everyone reacts the same to meds. Good luck to you.

Hi Krista,

I'm not a doctor, but I don't think the medications vary for I or II, they vary for the symptoms you display -- such as missglip and her anxiety and her rapid cycling. The basics are usually the same, I believe: a mood stabilizer and then either an antidepressant for depression, an antipsychotic for mania, or both, cause I'm special. (I take only a tiny amount of anti-psychs.) Then you've got the anti anxiety drugs and the drugs for sleep... You get the picture. I think what changes from Bipolar I to II is how severe the symptoms are, so that probably affects how much of the drug you takes as well.

It really depends on the symptoms you are having, the meds are pretty much the same. The only thing that may be different is the dosing of the meds.

I also know that pdocs are more likely to prescribe antidepressants to BPII people and are reluctant to prescribe them to BPI patients. But other than that I think they are all the same.
