Hi Everyone,
This is my first time posting. I have read many post and decided to join. I was first officially diagnosed about 14 years ago with depression. Thinking back as a kidm I know I hve had depression long before that. I was put on anti-depressants. Several years ago my pdoc took me off the anti-depressants and started me on mood stabilizers because I was having symptoms of bi-polar. I have been on several mood stabilizers over the years. I tend to have more depressive episodes than I do manic episodes so I asked my pdoc at the time(I now just recently started seeing a new one) to add an ant-depressant. She refused and said this was not a good idea. I read up on it and this is a common practice. They say it tends to cause a manic episode. I was already unhappy with her so I found a new doc. I am in one of depressive states at the momemt. I asked my new pdoc to add an anti-depressant. She was hesitant at first but with talking to my therapist and me. She started me on Celexa 10 mg. I was on this previously which I did very well.
My question is, is there other people on both a mood stablizer and anti-depressant and how is it working?
The other meds I am currently on are Topamax 200 mg/day, depakote which she is weaning me off due to side effects. So the goal is that I will be on Topamax 200 mg and the Celexa. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Taurus,

First let me welcome you to Healing Well and to the bipolar board. Glad you decided to join.

I think there are MANY of us on both mood-stabilizers and anti-depressants. I am. And it's not uncommon but it is done very carefully and under close watch. I take Topamax and Lamictal as my mood-stabilizers, with Lexapro and Serzone for depression. I'm BP II so I stay mostly on the depressive side. But when I'm in an episode I have to see my doc like every 2 weeks. And she's also got me on Abilify for an anti-psych. (I take it all! :-))

I hope that's useful.

Lithium SR 600mg and Celexa 20mg seems to be working pretty well for me so far.

I'm on a mix:

Geodon 40
Lamictal 200
Topamax 200 (for migraine)
Xanax .25 (as needed for anxiety)

I am BP 2 and tend to be much more depressed than manic. I get mildly manic but it is more that productive kind of manic. I clean the house a lot and that sort of thing.

Thanks everyone for the info. It will take time for me to see how both work for me. I'm just really wanting to feel better and hope that by adding the Celexa it will work out well for me. Especially since my last pdoc was dead set against adding an anti-depressant and my new pdoc was hessitant. I just have to be patient and try to stay focused.

Exactly, keep trying to find that right combo. I am BP 1 and have more mania, When I did get really depressed, anti-depression mediation sent me over the top full blown mania. So right now I am on a mood stabalizier, Zyprexa and Xanax. So far so good, but I went thru many meds before I found one that worked. Yesterday I broke out in a rash, I am so hoping it is from changing soap/laundry det and not the med. Every time you have to start over from square one, it gets kind of scarry. But I refuse to give up, there is something out there to help me and you too!

Welcome and have a good day. Happy Thanksgiving
