Hi is everyone?  I'm wondering if anyone else thinks that Bipolar disorder and ADHD/ADD have ALOT in common?  I know I've been diagnoses with adult adhd but then the question of bipolar disorder came up some years later and I'm being treated with Lamictal for the bipolar and I absolutely have NO concentration or focus and I'm so restless I can't sit still for more than 15 minutes.  I don't believe I have both those diagnosisies' so I'm asking if anyone else has this issue??  I really think its adhd which may be masquerading as bipolar.  really, the symptoms for both are much the same.  anyone??  A smile for all   Jeanne

Hi Jeanne,

Well, hypomania and ADHD have several things in common, but Bipolar Disorder and ADHD are completely different. The key difference is the presence of depression. ADHD doesn't swing back and forth. It doesn't turn off and on, and switch places with depression. True mania requires a break with reality, so no, it's not the same thing either.

If you are experiencing restlessness, lack of concentration and focus and you're bipolar, I'm guessing you're either experiencing a hypomanic phase or you're ADHD is really kicking in. In either case, I'd call the doc, because probably you need your meds adjusted.

I hope you feel better soon!
