Hi everyone,

I need to get off of Abilify because I can't afford it! Yipes! Anyone have any recommendations for alternative mood-stabilizers or anti-psychs that they've liked?

Let me know if you find it.  I'm on Abilify too and can't stay on much longer!
I am seriously thinking about trying no meds, no caffiene, and a rigid sleep schedule, and staying in touch with my Dr's.  I ordered a book about bipolar with no meds.  I expect I'll have to make major diet changes too.  (  :(  )
I can't handle my short attention span on meds.  I'm on school so it's a big deal.
At least I know that Abilify works within 48 hours, so if I get unstable, they know what to do for me.
Still weighing out my options...

I have been on a lot of meds in the past and can tell you that it is unfortunate that you have to give up one that has worked so well for you. I wish I can recommend another rx to you, but I cannot. Most of the ones I have been or I am currently on are even more expensive than Abilify; or have a tendency to make you gain a lot of weight. Abilify tends to be a lil more weight neutral than most of what is out there, and doesn't require you to get routine bloodwork like more rx out there. I would talk to your pdoc about alternative, less $$ rx out there. A lot of the new meds don't have generic versions available yet.

Good Luck and please let us know how things go!! :-)

That is horrible that you have to go off of the Abilify...darn drug companies!!

I have been on Risperdal for 2 years now, and I have had no problems. Has not made me gain weight...but it is hard to lose weight.

I'm prescribed 30 mg. and a 30 day supply costs $ did a little research and found out that their aren't any more benefits to taking 30mg. over 15mgs. So I split them in half and
only take 15mgs. Not suggesting anyone do this but it's working for me and I now spend half as much because 30mgs. now lasts 2 months instead of one!!!

I know it sounds too simple or too good to be true, but fish oil has been shown in studies to control bipolar disorder.  It takes about two months of daily usage before it provides its strongest affects, and it also helps to control cholesterol, makes your skin and hair healthier, etc.  Please do some research to learn the many benefits of this natural substance.
