Hi everyone. Maybe you can advise me. I've had the same PDoc for 7 years and I'm starting to feel I'm over medicated. First it was trileptal and wellbutrin and trazadone, then lamictal and wellbutrin and trazadone, then stattera and lamictal and trazadone -- finally in September, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis after a devastating illness that required hospitalization. Prednisone stopped the symptoms, but create their own, one of them being mania and insomnia. She started in with sleeping pills (much needed), but took my off anti-depressants (correct thing to do with prednisone) and put me on an anti-psychotic, Zyprexa, which made me gain 30 much needed pounds I had lost with the disease and lifted me out of a depression.

After 3 1/2 months I tapered off prednisone, went into remission for Ulcerative Colitis and whittled down to lamictal and trileptal, trazadone and klonipin for sleeping. Sleeping was still the problem and I had incessant anxiety from neck through my torso. I was afraid the Ulcerative Colitis would come back. I think the anxiety, which was relatively new, was caused by the prednisone. I worry, but now the latest is incessant itching -- a stress response.

Meanwhile, she wanted me on Geodon to calm the anxiety.

Enough is enough. She's throwing more drugs on me. Everytime I go in her Rx pad is out. I keep telling her there has got to be another way but she insists there's not. I went on Geodon for two days and my husband was furious because I was out of it.

I'm looking at holistic things for sleeping. I've already stopped the trazadone. I got melatonin and ZMG (Zinc, magnesium and B complex). I'm still taking a little trileptal at night and want to stop that.

She says I need this stuff and wants me to fall back on Klonipin if I can't sleep. I feel this is getting out of hand. I have another appointment with a different psychistrist at my husband's insistent.

Do you have any comments or advice

Hi Ellen,

It's true, we begin to feel like guinea pigs after a while! At my most I was taking 9 different meds a day for my thyroid and for bipolar. Now I'm down to 5. It is perfectly normal for docs to bust out the meds as yours is doing. I think getting a second opinion is a safe bet. Find out what another doc recommends. UC and bipolar is tough because the UC meds can exacerbate the mania, etc... But if you're not sleeping, that makes the moods out of control too. It's a tough call.

Good luck,
