I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Kevin, I am 25, a college student and have been married for a little over a year. I was diagnosed about 2 years ago and still haven't found pills that work.
My question is what do you guys get out of therapy? I was raised a traditional Irish boy and we do not discuss feelings and thoughts, etc. I have been to several counselors in my past and never return for a second visit.
On my wife's insistance I agreed to go to a therapist. I have a marriage counselor, weekly 1-1 sessions, and weekly group sessions. I find myself anxious before I go, bored/confused about what we talk about, plus it eats up so much time. Does it help yall?

Hello Kevin,

Welcome to HealingWell and the Bipolar Forum. It is great to have you here!

When I first started attending therapy on a regular basis more than 5 years ago, I was a mess. I would go and beat around the bushes with everything, and would be super anxious before as well as during the session. But then I learned that anxiety is common with people who have bp, and I dont let it hold me back anymore.

Now, I try to make therapy a big part of my life, but have been going as much as I should lately. It keeps me in check, so that my symptoms don't get out of control. Plus it is a good place to get rid of stress from daily life and to talk to someone who is a neutral party.

I have gone through a few therapists in the last couple of years till I found the right one, and it was a stressful moment. And 2 weeks ago I learned that my current therapist is leaving, I freaked out a little. But have not come to accept it. Change is good and it is a part of life.

Good luck and please let us know how things go.

You know my greatest thing about therpay was simply getting things out in the open. Once they are out in the light they are much less scary.  I am an irish lad also and i have found that discussing my issues has helped me greatly uderstand who i am and where i am coming from.

In short it has only helped me greatly. As has discussing things here.
