Well, I am not sure I should say this. But my therapist asked me if I was religious. I told her no and then we got off on a tangent and never expounded on the subject.
My personal belief is that religion is a crutch that people use to find morality. Life doesn't come with an instruction manual and religion (again IMHO) is one for people who can't really find their own way. It never ever fails to amaze me at how the most religious people seem to be the ones always 'sinning'. After all, they can tell God they are sorry, they are forgiven and can go on. Those than aren't, have to deal with their own conscious. There is no better 'discipliner' than one's self. Either you have it or you don't. To me it's a 'get out of jail free' card that people abuse.
Is religion bad? No, but like a lot of things, it's the bad apples that ruin it for everyone else.
I personally believe that you don't need religion to be a moral person. You either are or are not (I know, things are never black and white). Unfortunately, in this country, the reverse tends to be the expectation, yet we see in the news everyday how it's not. Politicians in particular really get me. Every week, I read about
some religious politician or figure, that was caught doing the very thing they publicly reviled.
My wife and I have had this discussion a lot. And she never seems to see the correlation. I remember one time in particular, she owned a house (for investment purposes) in a city about
90 miles away. A woman wanted to rent it and she was very, vocally religious. I told her it was a bad idea to rent to her, for the reasons I've described. Guess what, she not only defaulted on paying any rent at all, but threatened her when she called asking for it. She finally bailed on the house without notice and was no where to be found. There were other episodes in my wife's life where similar wrongs were done to her by 'religious' people, but none so explicit as this. Bear in mind that she is Indian and her parents were removed from India (now Pakistan) because of religion and saw that violence and chaos, first hand as a child.
I apologize if I have offended anyone, but LW asked for opinions and I wanted to share mine.
