I'm really lucky atm. I am managing to take Tegretol without it causing dystonia - yet. I'm having insomnia and hypersexuality as symptoms. I can't make myself sleep but I am managing to resist the latter urges :). It's good to stand back and say "If I was depressed or in normal mood, is this a road I would go down". Aiming to act in normal mood despite elevated or depressed mood states is a nice little challenge indeed! Hypersexuality is one very frequent symptom that people with bipolar don't tend to discuss out of modesty. Managing hypersexuality is just as important as managing our other symptoms IMHO.

Thats why Bi-Polar requires at least 2 meds, sometimes as many as 4 because if you give us just a downer we're going to get Depressed/Suicidal and if we get just an upper we're gonna go straight to Hypomania. Are you getting your meds from a Psych Dr. or your GP/PCP because your family doc isn't qualified to treat Mental Illness. I hope you find a combo that works, it makes All the difference.

Yeah, I'm under the top psychiatrists - and am awaiting an appt with a top haemotologist because I get paralysis, seizures, dystonia, delirium and fatigue from medication. After 4 years of trying different medications the psychiatrists require more investigations into my liver and kidneys as neither metabolise medication sufficiently. The psychiatrists suspect rare genetic disorders. Still resisting urges nicely but the insomnia is a problem... and the dystonia from the Tegretol is kicking in now. I'm managing the state quite well - and getting things done that I've been too sick to do for a year without overdoing things. So I am making it work the best I can for me, without depleting myself. Cheers :)
