Hey Everyone,

I just want to begin by saying I'm new to all of this and hope I don't offend anyone. I recently found out my girlfriend has been suffering from Hypomania.

Background information:

I met the most amazing girl about 2 years ago through a mutual friend. When we first started talking all the odds were against us forming any type of relationship. Im happy to say we defied all the odds and were able to develop something amazing. about a year ago, I decided to go back to school (overseas) so I could get a better paying job, so I can give her everything she desires. I come back home for only a couple of weeks every 4 months, so I want to make those weeks count.

I started noticing something was completely off around september. A couple of months later while I was away for school, I found out she was hospitalized for having an 'episode'. She has since refused to take her medication. She has also started talking to random guys on the internet from different countries.

To be honest I had no idea what hypomania was or what it did to a person. I have done countless hours of research trying to figure out what it is. Im still struggling to figure out what I should be doing to help her through the next time something like this happens.

Some of the questions I have are:
1) how does a person feel when they are going through an episode?
2) how can I encourage her to take her medication?
3) are all people who are diagnosed with hypomania more sexually active? and what causes them to be more sexually active?
4) what can I do to stop her from pushing me away?

I love her a lot and want to her to get well. I just wish she would realize how much I care about her.

Cheers,

Hello Australia_IG,

Welcome to the forum!

Everyone experience with Bipolar may be different for the individual. Is your friend attending therapy presently? Both therapy and meds work together. Her therapist would also be able to help her see the importance of taking her meds.

A hypomanic episode is characterized by a distinct period of persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood, lasting throughout at least 4 days and present for most of the day nearly every day. This hypomanic mood is clearly different from the person’s usual mood. Some people states that during hypomania sensuality is pervasive, the desire to seduce and be seduced is irresistible.

Please view our Bipolar resources area where you can get more information on this as well as how to cope with your partner throughout this:

You can try talking to her and letting her know that you care about her and you are there for her. If she does not want to talk, maybe give her a little space but let her know you will be there when she is ready.
Please remember to take care of yourself.

We are here for you.
