I have bipolar disorder (manic depression). But I can honestly say that I haven't been depressed in many years, other than the the occasional blues which everyone gets.

I also haven't been in a manic phase in years either.

However, when I was in manic phases years ago, I would have a lot of thoughts that would go through my mind. And I had a real, strong desire to express almost all of those thoughts to others.

So if you know someone who is in a manic phase who talks a lot and monopolizes the conversation every time you and others have a chat with the person, you have to realize that it's very hard for him or her to not talk way too much.

I know it's difficult to deal with someone who won't stop talking. It can be downright annoying. But you have to realize that if the person wasn't in a manic phase and was emotionally healthy, he/she would be less likely to monopolize the conversation.

Not necessarily. Their are personality types with no apparent mental illness that do this. Yes in mania with bi polar...yes in high stress...and in non bi polar related psychosis. Telling someone truthfully to take a breath is a positive self response to realize this. But yes more compassion is needed. HT

I know a person who monopolizes the conversations all the time. He seems to be high energy too. I really don't think he is manic because he is that way all the time. Unless he is manic all the time. Which I don't think he is. He is just high energy and yes it is annoying.

One day I purposely did that to him. Brought up a topic and kept talking about it and asking him questions. He had to leave. I don't think he liked somebody else controlling the conversation. It was rather funny.

I think like Jamie said there are personality traits that can be considered. But it is true when people are manic they can talk a lot, do a lot of things to excess. So it is a good thing to think about because like you said Mike, they probably can't help it.

Good topic...

Hugs, Karen...

HT, I wasn't saying that all people who talk way too much have bipolar disorder. I was just talking about the ones who do talk too much when they are in a manic phase.

I just wanted to clear that up.

Hi,

Some people would talk a lot when in a manic phase.
Some people naturally have high energy and talk a lot. Some people may be accustom to talking a lot due to their jobs.

I see it as their personality as well. It all depends on the person.
