Hi--I am ParisNavy and I have bi-polar disorder...I was on Lithium for many years and in 2018 I had to go to the hospital for four days because the Lithium became toxic in my body..Had to wiggle a bit and find some other meds. that would help me...Right now, I am on Neurontin, Seroquel And Prozac and it is a good combo for me...I am just curious as to what kind of treatments are you using for your bi-polar disorder, anybody?? DO you guys ever get the mixed episodes?? I get those now and then when you are manic and depressed at the same time...I also use Thorazine if I have one of my bad manic episodes...Right now I am more depressed that manic right now..Just wonder how other bi-polar people cope and what helps you the most?? I am just very curious about this..8-]]

As a bipolar, I take 2, 300 mg. tablets of Litihium and 7.5 mg of Mirtazapine anti-depressant a day. Sorry to to hear that the lithium became toxic. It's good to hear that your new medicines are working.

Don't know that I've ever had mixed episodes of mania and depression. Without medicine I was usually one or the other. The Lithium kept my mania in check and the anti-depressant helped with that.

Do you still get bad manic episodes, even on the meds? What happens when that occurs?

You say you're more depressed right now? I was probably somewhat depressed and got a helper who visited 2 or 3 times a week to get groceries, etc., and on the 1st or 2nd visit she told a joke and I thought, "I don't laugh." After a few weeks, she told a joke and I heard someone laugh and I looked around and tried to find out who that was. It turned out it was me.

I had laughed for probably the first time in a long time. So some socialization helped me. Are you able to be around people?

You asked you were wondering very much how bi-polar people cope. Are you going through some difficulties now?

Hi. I live with bi polar and have mixed mood. I know what ya mean.

I use lamotrogine and an anti depressant. Yes lithium either works or not. Or is just too toxic. It is very hit n miss.

I cope with music by burning insense snd by walking or distraction. Cleaning is a great one for mania. I am in the depressed phase of bp2 at this time.

Keep strong. HT

Your right, the lithium worked for me for years until I landed in the hospital..I never thought of burning insense, cool idea!! Yeah, it does seem to help to clean around the house, it gives you something to focus on...am sorry you are in the depths of a depression right now..You keep strong as well!! 8-]]

Hi yes lamotrogine is newer and is an anti epeletic. It is what i call a foundation med...in the background it operates. Assist with mood and mania. Best i been on.

It bar the Johnson's rash, rare, is known in the community as less side effects and designed as such. Slow start up. HT

ParisNavy, I know what it's like to be in mixed episodes, although I haven't had issues with mixed episodes or mania since 2011.

I used to take Lithium as well as a few other meds at the same time for a long time.

But now I'm only on one psychiatric medication. It's called Clozaril. And it has helped me greatly.

Thanks for all of your comments---MM, I will have to mention the lamotrogine to my shrink...@ TimTam--Yes, I still get bad manic episodes even on my meds.--I can get very angry sometimes and that is usually when I have to take a Thorazine..it calms me down quite a bit, I am kind of in a daze when I take that..No, I am not around any people but my parents cause of this pandemic going on..I have a few friends I talk too via the internet, of course...Yes, am depressed..I also get those migraines as well and I spend a lot of time in bed and try to sleep cause I rarely feel good, am always hurting...Is good you found yourself laughing at a joke, that is cool!! 8-]]

Hi ParisNavy,

I am not bipolar, but I do know that thorazine is an older medication. My mother took it and it made her run. I guess it wasn't a good match for her. It didn't calm her down at all. I think it made her a little more manic, but in a weird stupor. She only took it for a little while. She would repeat her words when on it. Like I say I don't think it was a good match for her. I had a friend that took it when he was in the service. It made his face real red. And after that medications started to work opposite on him. Something that was suppose to speed him up would calm him down and if it was meant to calm him it would speed him up. These are just different situation I know of. Not saying it is going to do anything bad for you. It sounds like it works well for you. Or does what it is suppose to. I am glad.

I am sorry you get angry. I use to. I think I was a little bipolar as my mother was and my sister is too. I take abilify which is a bipolar med but I am taking it to slow my thinking down as I think too much. And because it is a mood stabilizer. There are many different meds for bipolar and it sounds like some of them are newer. I hope you find what works best for you if you haven't already.

Best wishes.

Hugs, Karen...

Sorry to hear you are depressed. I knew it was a stupid question to ask during the virus, are you around a lot of people, but I just thought I would ask it anyway. Prior, to the virus, were you able to get around people.

Did you inherit your bi-polar from someone in your family? I inherited mine from my mother's mother. She was in an era, 30s, 40s, early 1950s, where they didn't have any medicine for bipolar. They didn't even have a diagnosis, it was lumped in with schizophrenia. She spent a lot of her adult life in a mental institution 100 miles from her house.

They let her out one time to live with family members and she went to a downtown bar and got drunk, and they had to call her family members to pick her up. So we have a lot to be thankful for, medicines and whatnot, and not having to be in an institution but can stay at home.

Prior to the virus, were you able to get out? Did socialization help? Was that about the time, also, that your mental illness started?

Here's a joke: You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy cupcakes. And that’s kinda the same thing.

Human beings only use ten percent of their brains. Ten percent! Can you imagine how much we could accomplish if we used the other sixty percent?

Hey there,

Someone close to me was using lamotrogine but he built tolerance to it and the doses kept needing to be increased to a point where he started suffering from mild aphagia (loss of words). That was hard for him to accept so he eventually tapered off his meds with help of his Dr and was able to use CBD and CBG (both legal) to help treat his symptoms. It has really been working for him and is all natural.

I have seen it work for him first hand and if anyone is interested in learning more, don't hesitate to drop me a message!

Hi Sar4,

I see you posted in fibromyalgia too. Both posts are almost exactly the same advocating CBD and CBG. I hope you know what you are talking about when you say that people are tapering off their meds and going on CBD. I would hate for somebody to actually do this. Especially with chemical imbalance of the brain. And I am hoping you are not trying to sell these items here using the forum to advertise. Please tell me you don't have a vested interest in these items.

I agree CBD is good for a lot of things, but don't be suggesting people go off their meds and try it.

Actually, ParisNavy, you are not bipolar like the title of this thread says. Instead, you have bipolar disorder. You aren't your illness.
