My name is Brandi I usually frequent the Anxiety forum because when all this started for me my first Dx was generalized anxiety dis. and then went to borderline personality dis. and now they have added bipolar dis. also, I recently just started therapy and my therapist recommended that we try the Omega 3 fatty acids as a mood stabilizer does anyone know about this? Will it help? I have been able to find some info on the internet that says it works like lithium and is a good alternative. But I am also a drug seeker I know I am and have never placed much faith in alternative tx. any advice would be helpful.

I also don't have alot of faith in natural remedys.  That doesn't mean that it won't work.  I just have never heard of bipolar disorder being sucessfully treated with supplements.  If you have alot of improvement with this please let me know.  I HATE meds but am afraid to take a chance with anything my dr. hasn't prescribed.  I will say, that if you don't feel like this is working I would seek another opinion.

Take Care

I am a little surprised that your therapist would suggest that in the first place.  Omega 3 supplements are good for anyone to take with doctors supervision as this is fish oil and studies are that most of us don't eat enuf fish in our diet.  However, I would definitely consult your psychiatrist or regular physician before taking it to ensure that it does not cause some interaction with the medications that you are already on.  There are no studies that support Omega 3's alone helping BP or BPD.
