You may want to be carefull with depakote ER.  First, it really packs the pounds on.  You will need to get depakote levels on a regular basis.  I decided to go off of it after 3 years, and it took me over a month to wean myself off, then I had almost a month of trembling in my hands.  Some doctors will not prescribe it anymore.  Personally, I'd try to find something else, but of course its you choice.

I don't take this med but I've talked to alot of people who have and still do. I have heard very good things about this medication, although one of the side effects do appear to be weight gain. I personally would take a few pounds to feel like myself again. And I hear that once you've been on it awhile, its not all that hard to take the weight off if you work at it a little.
If your dr. feels like this will help you, I would personally give it a chance. Of course I'm no Dr. just my personal opinion. Keep in mind that everyone reacts to meds differently and just because it doesn't (or does for that matter) work for them does not mean that will apply to you. Just be diligent about reporting anything that alarms you to your dr.
I hope this works out well for you
Good judgement comes from experience and alot of that comes from bad judgement.
