I had my appt. today w/ my therapist and she couldnt believe my prescribing dr took me off lamictal w/o prescribing something else. She said I was having breakthrough rapid cycling made worse by the lamictal. She got me in a crisis appt. with another doctor (mine was on vacation). So I was at kaiser for 2 hours today seeing two doctors. My therapist is great, she worked really hard to help me.
I was prescribed Trileptal to take daily and Seroquel as needed to sleep. What is everyones experience with these?
Also, what she really wanted to put me on was Depakote w/ Topamax. I guess topamax helps w/ the weight gain. Has anyone ever taken Depakote w/o experiencing weight gain?
She was very nice, she went over everything with me and let me make the choice.
Apparently depakote works much faster. I'm just NOT ready for that yet. For some reason I'm very scared of that one.
Thanks soooooo much to everyone who keeps responding to all of my posts. I know I post a lot. Especially about meds.
Please share experiences with all these meds. THANKS! :-)

I am sorry that Lamictal didn't work for you either.  I was on it for a while when I realized that my symptom were getting worse too.  Hang in there, and all will be well with time.
In the past I was put on Trileptal and Seroquel.  I had side effects with the Seroquel at that made me have to stop it, but didn't have any major concerns to worry about.  I liked Trileptal for sleep, I didn't have any problems that I remembered.  I was supposed to take as a mood stabilizer, but it was not the best choice.  It is good if then with another mood stabalizer like you would be.
I have not taken Depakote/Tomomax.  But one thing I do know is that the combination that you are supposed to take will help manage the weight gain.  Depakote will make one gain weight and Topomax is weight neutral or people are known to lose a few pounds on it.  That is probably why your Dr. picked the combination.
I have met a few people who have taken Depakote and they have all gained weigh from 10 lbs to 100 lbs.  So no, I have not met anyone who has not gained weight.  I have heard of a few that did not gain as much due to Topomax or other meds like it.
They also picked Depakote because it has shown to be effective in people who are rapid-clycling.  Lithium is not as effective and neither are other mood stabilizers.  Next line of defense after Depakote are anti-psychotics which can make you gain just as much weight and have worse side effects.
Best Wishes on your new meds, and don't be nervous in asking your Dr. any questions or concerns you may have about them.
Again, hang in there!  :-)

I take Serouquel 100mg for sleep. It works for me.  So far no side effects.  Good luck!

confused  I have been having quite a bit of difficulty with serouquel, so I am glad you brought it up.  When I 1st started it @ 100mg, I slept like I haven't in years.  This lasted about a week, then I had severe difficulty with daytime malaise; my physcian upped my dose to 200 mg, I again slept really well, but the apathy and daily malaise increased.  I am also on Ritalin for other reasons, but my usual dose of Ritalin helps me with daily fatigue.  With the Serouquel, I couldn't escape this "ZOMBIE" feeling even with double doses of Ritalin.  I have not tried the trileptal, but the Seroquel has been difficult for me over a 2 1/2 month period.  I also noticed almost immediate weight gain.
I am seeing my psychiatrist tomorrow about switching to ABILIFY.  Have any of you tried this one.  What is your opinion on it?

I had the same problem with Seroquel and more, which is why I am not taking it anymore.
I took abilify for about a week and I was out of it for a while (when I was last hospitalized).  It is a strong medicine.  It has a half-life of 75-96 hrs so it means it is in your system a lot longer than most other meds.  I was more of a "ZOMBIE" on Abilify than I have been on Seroquel or Zyprexa.
There are other meds I tired for sleep they are trileptal, trazadone, ambien, different benzos.  They all worked well for a while but wore off with time.  I have even tried Melatonin, and that seem to work good too.
But what works for one person may not work for the next, also your body may react differently than mine did.  Best wishes on finding the right med for your sleep.
